Hello
I have the following setup:
Host: Windows XP Professional
Guest: Linux Gentoo with kernel 2.6.24
VBox: 4.2.12.r84980
VBoxGuestAdditions: 4.2.12.r84980
The problem is that the VBoxService for timesync does not work properly and, as a result, there is drift between the host and guest time. I have used the following command on Windows Host:
VBoxManage guestproperty set "Elot" "/VirtualBox/GuestAdd/VBoxService/--timesync-set-threshold" 1000
When I use the command to get the above value, it is reported back successfully on Windows Host (1000).
I then try to change the clock on Windows Host either by setting it some minutes backward or ahead.
The Linux Guest clock does not change.
I verify that the VBoxService is running and when I check the output by "/usr/sbin/VBoxService -vv -f", I see the following error:
"timesync Error: VBoxServiceTimeSyncWorker: VbglR3GetHostTime failed; rc2=VERR_NOT_SUPPORTED"
Could you please help me identify the root cause of this error and how it can be resolved?
Thanks in advance
Maria

Re: timesync does not work on Linux guest
There is no "error", it only tells you that timesync is not supported in your guest.
Where did you install the guest additions from?

Re: timesync does not work on Linux guest
I followed instructions found in Ch. 4 (http://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch04.html#idp12039536) for Linux.
The Guest Additions seem to have been installed correctly.
Do you think that I should repeat the procedure?

Yes but if you read the top part you will see that Gentoo is not one of the officially supported guests.
I suspect that while installing there were errors and the install did not actually complete properly.
Gentoo has their own ported guest additions. You should remove the ones you installed and instead use theirs.

Thank you Perryg for your comment.
I thought that it would work for Gentoo only because in Chapter 4 refers that "Many other distributions are known to work with the Guest Additions."
I checked in Gentoo Packages and it seems that the latest stable version is 4.1.26.
Does this mean that I have to downgrade my VBox installation as well?

Re: timesync does not work on Linux guest
Probably not. There have been a lot of improvements but as far as Gentoo is concerned it might not matter.
