Can someone pls help me. I tried everything and I still cant get OSX 10.6.2 to install.

Im running A MACMINI Mountain lion OSX 10.8.3 and Im trying to get V.B. to install my MAC OS X 10.6.2 . I really need this software that I was running on my OLD G5 PPC and I read that Virtual Box lets you run older versions of the MAC OS(Which I need) within Virtual BOX

I made *3* ISOs DMG,CDR,ISO and tried to run VB on all 3 including my legit installation CD to no avail. Do you know what I could be doing wrong? Pls help.
Ive looked ay many youtube Videos, and I only found 1 video (that was a demo) that just showed that VB can install older OS's but I just cant get mine to install.
THe error message I keep getting when I set it up and hit start is:

ERROR : Could not read from the boot medium ! System Halted
Can anyone help me with this pls?

Just so you know running anything other than a server edition of OSX violates Apple's EULA and as far as I know VirtualBox frowns on doing so as do I. There are links to explain how to do it but I'm not posting any.

Word is that you can order the server version of Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) directly from the Apple store (by phone only, not online). They may ask you what you want it for and from what I've heard they don't seem to mind if you tell them you want to create a VM using it.

you could always run the server addition as a VM. I think she wants the non-server addition so she can run oldish software.

Yes. I want to run the non-server addition so that I can rum my older software until I can afford to spend the 1000's of dollars to re-buy my software for the new MACMINI.
Any help would be most appreciated .
Thanks again :)

As I mentioned earlier there are many places online explaining how to install it. However, assuming you can get it installed it will be slow. There are no guest additions for OSX so no full screen, no hardware acceleration etc.

With Apple currently selling the server version of Snow Leopard for $20 it's not a big cash outlay. It covers you legally with the EULA and other than the addition of some extra software to enable the server side it's identical to the standard version.

You can purchase Mac OS X 10.6 SERVER for $19.99 plus tax and shipping ($26.09 for me) by calling the Apple store on the phone, but not by trying to find 10.6 Server at the Apple on-line store.

I was successful at installing Mac OS X 10.6.3 Server on VirtualBox 4.1.26 and Mac OS X 10.8.4. I was also successful at installing Mac OS X 10.6.3 Server on VirtualBox 4.1.12 and Mac OS X 10.7.5. The installation worked equally well from the 10.6.3 DVD directly or from an ISO file that I burned from the DVD using Disk Utility. Below are the steps to install:

1. Uninstall VirtualBox by mounting the VirtualBox .dmg file and double-clicking the VirtualBox_Uninstall.tool
2. Download VirtualBox 4.1.26 and install it.
3. Start VirtualBox and in the VirtualBox Manager Window click on the New icon to start the Virtual Machine Wizard. Select Operating System: Mac OS X and Version: Mac OS X Server (64-bit). Click through the Wizard menus to select 2048 MB memory (or 1024 if you don't have a lot of memory) and a 20 GB VDI start-up disk, dynamically allocated. Finish by clicking Create (twice, in two windows).
4. In the VirtualBox Manager Window, select the Mac OS X virtual machine then click Settings to complete the configuration:
a. System -
Motherboard tab -
Boot Order: uncheck Floppy, leave CD/DVD-ROM and Hard Disk checked
Chipset: ICH9
Extended Features: check Enable IO APIC, Enable EFI, and Enable absolute pointing device
Processor tab -
Processor(s): 1 CPU
Execution Cap: 100%
Extended Features: check Enable PAE/NX
Acceleration tab -
Hardware Virtualization: check Enable VT-x/AMD-V and Enable Nested Paging
b. Display -
Video tab -
Video Memory: 64 MB
Monitor Count: 1
Extended Features: check Enable 3D Acceleration if you want, but it doesn't appear to help
Remote Display tab - uncheck Enable Server
c. Storage -
IDE Controller:
click on the optical disk icon on the left (which is labeled Empty)
click on the optical disk icon on the right and select either the DVD drive or an ISO file
CD/DVD Drive: IDE Secondary
uncheck Live CD/DVD
d. Network -
Adapter 1 tab -
check Enable Network Adapter
Attached to: NAT
e. Ports -
Serial Ports -
uncheck Enable Serial Port
USB -
check Enable USB Controller
check Enable USB 2.0 (EHCI) Controller if you have installed VirtualBox Extensions
f. Shared Folders -
Choose a shared folder if you want.
g. Click OK to save the configuration.
5. Click the Start arrow then wait patiently while the Mac OS X virtual machine boots. There may be several lengthy pauses. If you see the 'waiting for boot device message' you probably have a non-bootable boot device, such as would happen if you used Disk Utility to burn an ISO file, and selected "Mac OS X Server Installation Disk" instead of "SuperDrive". Eventually the Mac OS X installation window that asks you to choose a language will appear and you will be able to click through a few menus until the menu appears where you must choose a disk onto which to install Mac OS X. This window will be bland.
6. Click on the Utilities pull-down menu at the top of the screen and select Disk Utility. Then select the VDI volume at the left of the window and click on the Erase tab at the top of the window. Choose Format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and give the disk a name, such as Macintosh HD. Click on the Erase button toward the bottom right of the Window. When the erase operation has finished, as evidenced by the fact that Macintosh HD now appears at the left of the window, quit Disk Utility.
7. Now continue with the installation. When the installation finishes, the Mac OS X virtual machine will automatically reboot and start with installation again. Just power off the Mac OS X virtual machine by clicking on the red dot at the upper left of the window then selecting the "Power off the machine" option in the window that appears.
8. In the VirtualBox Manager window, select your Mac OS X virtual machine, click on settings, and go to the Storage window. Select the IDE controller by clicking on the optical disk icon on the left. Then click on the optical disk icon on the right, and choose to "Remove disk from virtual drive" then click OK at the lower right of the window to save your settings.
9. Click the start arrow and Mac OS X will boot up. You will have to enter the serial number and configure Mac OS X. In my experience, this process must be repeated because the first time through Mac OS X cannot set the system administrator.
10. When you have finished configuring the OS, check for updates and update to 10.6.8.
11. You can change the virtual machine screen resolution to 1440x900 by quitting VirtualBox, opening a terminal window, navigating to the "VirtualBox VMs" folder, then navigating to the folder that corresponds to your Mac OS X virtual machine, and typing "VBoxManage setextradata <your virtual machine name> VBoxInternal2/EfiGopMode 4". Or you can choose 1280x1024 resolution by using 3 instead of 4.

I don't buy the argument that you can't run a virtualized instance on an OS you own on another OS you own, on Apple hardware. This would be like arguing that you can't switch between an older OS and your main one (as they support with Windows in Bootcamp), either on a partition or an external disk. Running it on non-Apple hardware, I can see an issue, especially if the OS media isn't purchased. But if you paid for everything, you can use it.

Anyway, I spent a couple of days on this so I could run some older code that doesn't build or run on Mountain Lion. Turns out the solution was to simply drop back to VBox 4.1.x. No messing around with making images from other installs or trial and guess in the UI. I set up the simplest guest environment I could, loaded the DVD, and it installed. It has since fetched and installed the Combo Update, bringing it up to 10.6.8.

So for what it's worth, the problem isn't in OS X but in the latest VBox release.
