VERR_VMX_MSR_LOCKED_OR_DISABLED E_FAIL 0x80004005

Post by thomasr74 »

hi,

i am using vbox 4.2.12 on win7 32 bit to start linux images.
cpu virtualization in bios is active.

most of the time i get the error "VERR_VMX_MSR_LOCKED_OR_DISABLED" when i try to start the image with more then one cpus. when i reduce the amount of cpus to one, its working. sometimes its also working also with more then one cpus.
i can't find any pattern when it works or not.
any ideas how to localize the software on the system which, most of the time, locks the vt-x feature?

lg.

VT-x features locked or unavailable in MSR. (VERR_VMX_MSR_LOCKED_OR_DISABLED).

The error means exactly what it means : Virtualization is either not available (check your CPU spec), disabled (check your BIOS) or already in use (Hyper-V, XP Mode, VMWare, etc).

i think its available but in use.

i am looking to find a way to find the process which locks/uses also the feature.
therefore it would be helpfull to know how virtualbox recognize that this feature is not available.
i try to follow vbox startup in processmonitor and explorer but its to much information.

Less helpful than you might think, since I believe VBox simply examines a CPU register and sees that the feature is already locked. It can't tell who locked it since there is no host management of the feature.
