Re: no audio in linux guest
From the hosts terminal/command window type VBoxManage showvminfo <VM Name> --details and post here. Replace <VM Name> with the actual name of the VM. Use " " if the name has a space in it.
Note if the host is Windows you need to be in the directory that has VBoxManage.exe for the command to work.

Re: no audio in linux guest
Change the controller to Controller: AC97
Re: no audio in linux guest
I also lack sound on a linux guest, but for:
host: windows 8 64-bit
guest: ubuntu 12.04
vbox version: 4.2.12.
GuestAdditions version: 4.2.10
vbox audio setting for the guest (per Machine > Settings Audio menu; confirmed with VBoxManage showvminfo):
host audio driver: Windows DirectSound
host audio controller: ICH AC97
Both of these settings are greyed out so I cannot change them from the machine menu.
Win8 host > Device Manager > Sound, video and game controllers: SoundMAX Integrated Digital High Definition Audio (works fine on host).
guest Multimedia PulseAudio Volume Control gui shows only one output device: Dummy Output
guest Multimedia Mixer gui shows Sound card: Playback: Dummy Output (PulseAudio Mixer)
No controls are set to mute as far as I can see and volume levels are set high.
When I play an mp3 sound file with VLC on guest, the Volume Control Playback tab shows a healthy dancing output level as expected, but only appears for Dummy Output.
How to get sound out on my real host speakers?

Re: no audio in linux guest
@markf2748,
Post the results of the following from the guests terminal:
lspci
As for items being grey so you can't change them, it is most likely because the guest is not shut down.

Re: no audio in linux guest
And what was edited?
Post a screenshot of the hardware section in the audio settings of the guest.

Is the guest really shut down (not saved state)? When I shutdown the guest, the Oracle VM VirtualBox Manager > Settings > Audio also shows all boxes grayed out.
Re: no audio in linux guest
You have a point. When I truly shutdown guest with "power off the machine [uncheck] Restore..." then I have more Audio settings options available. I will play around with these and report back later.
Thanks!
Thanks!

Thank you, it works now.Perryg wrote:Change the controller to Controller: AC97
The "preferences " of Gnome Mplayer also needs to be set to corresponding options.
Seems still no audio setting in "Settings Manager", but this is trifle.
Re: no audio in linux guest
No sound here yet. Screen shot of the audio settings is attached with ICH AC97 selected.
Available hardware settings are -
Host Audio Driver: Windows Direct Sound | Null Audio Driver
Audio Controller: Intel HD Audio | ICH AC97 | Soundblaster 16
I tried playing an mp3 file with Windows Direct Sound + each of the audio controllers.
Intel HD Audio introduces side effect of unstable guest graphics display. It is the only controller for which "aplayer -l" detects a graphics card. Soundblaster 16 also introduces video artifacts, ICH AC97 does not.
I tried VLC media player, audicity 2.0.0, and gnome-mplayer 1.0.5. Removed VLC - no change.
mplayer has an extensive list of Audio Output selections in its preferences configuration. They display expected activity in the Audio Meter, but no sound. Audacity has fewer choices, showing ALSA interface host using PortAudio v19-devel (built Dec 10 2011).
Installed mixers are alsa and PulseAudio Volume Control (PulseAudio Mixer). All levels are high and no mutes that I can see.

@markf2748,
I need to see the guests log file (as an attachment)
See Online Users Manual for the location of the file.

Re: no audio in linux guest
Three log files attached. Let me know if there are special cases you want included and I will generate new logs.
FYI, host is a dual monitor workstation with Intel quadcore Xeon 64-bit processor, Win8, nVidia Quadro 2000 graphics card, keyboard, mouse, usb keyboard, 2 usb mice, usb stick, usb dongle, and usb expansion hub attached.
Perhaps you could also clarify one thing for me. "uname -a" returns i386 - i686 for the guest, indicating a 32-bit guest architecture. Yet at ~line 15 of log file it says "OS type: 'Ubuntu_64'". Does that refer to a 64-bit version of Ubuntu installed on 32-bit guest? Or does it refer to the underlying host processor architecture which is indeed 64-bit?
Thanks for offering to look at these files.

Re: no audio in linux guest
Overloading us with additional (unrequested) logs does not necessarily help. The .1, .2 etc logs are just the logs from previous sessions. All we need is one log, i.e. from a session that exhibited the problem. And remember to shut down the VM before grabbing the log, to ensure the log shows a complete session.

Re: no audio in linux guest
What is "uwhpsc" and where did you get it?
Aside from having way too many snapshots the log looks fine. The answer to your other questions will be based off the answer to the one above.
