USB device grayed out.

Post by vsrahul »

I have recently installed VirtualBox v4.12.12. Guest OS - Ubuntu 13.04, Host OS - Mac OS X v10.7.3.
I am unable to access my USB drive. It is unavailable (or) grayed out. I have enabled the USB 2.0 controller.
I have tried using filters but it did not work. I even tried plugging in the USB flash drive when the VM was turned on, but even this didn't help! I am totally new to this vbox software. I feel it's a permission problem. But I don't know how to set the permissions. I have searched for it but I couldn't find any. Thanks a lot for trying to solve this issue.
The USB flash drive I have used - 16 gb SanDisk Cruzer Fit.

Make sure you install the extension pack (not the same as the guest additions). USB 2.0 is not available until that is done.

In the filter, the following fields need to be empty/blank
  • Revision:
    Manufacturer:
    Product:

I don't know why you say that. Most of my USB filters have those fields filled in.

Yes but most Mac users find this a necessary option with USB.
Much like you can not have more than one processor enabled when using USB. If you have set the guest to use two processors or if those fields are filled in the likelihood or success is not good.

I have installed the extension pack also. I have not installed any guest additions.

I have tried using usb filter. It didn't work.
Can you please tell me how to change permissions on a file in the /dev folder to access this usb drive? I have read about it, but I couldn't find how to do this.

That solved the problem that I was having with my Apple Internal Memory (SD) Card Reader.
