Win Host/OEL Guest w WebLogic. Can't reach guest from host

Post by gentscji »

I am trying to setup a VM on a Windows host with Oracle Enterprise Linux v6.4 (OEL) as the guest OS, where the guest has a WebLogic (WL) application server also installed on it, and I want to be able to access pages served from WL (for example the administration page deployed by default on port 7001 from WL) using Microsoft Internet Explorer running on the host.

I configured the VM using a bridged adaptor. The VM’s IP is assigned by DHCP and appears to be working as expected. I am able to ping the guest from the host and other workstations on the LAN as expected. When I go to bring up pages served by WL on the guest I am able to access the pages as expected from the guest (via Firefox on guest), but not able to access them from the host or any other workstations on the LAN. Tested with both IE and Firefox.

I tried setting the various Promiscuous Mode settings for the VM’s network adapter without seeing a difference in this behavior. I have tried connecting the VM’s network adapter to both wired and wireless physical network connections and also have not seen a difference in this behavior where I can bring up pages from the guest but am not able to access them from the host. I have also tried this with both WIN7 and WIN XP SP3 as the host OS, all resulting in the same behavior.

Thoughts on where I have gone wrong with my simple configuration using a bridged adaptor for the VM?

Thanks Perryg, I did turn off the Windows Firewall for the tests and did check to the WL logs to be sure it was bound to the correct IPs. Do you have any specific settings I might look at? Thanks again.

I will need information to be able to determine if it is a configuration issue.

First
  • From the hosts terminal/command window type VBoxManage showvminfo <VM Name> --details and post here. Replace <VM Name> with the actual name of the VM. Use " " if the name has a space in it.

Note if the host is Windows you need to be in the directory that has VBoxManage.exe for the command to work.
Then
  • ifconfig -a from a terminal on the guest
Next the exact information you are putting in the browser on the host PC that fails to reach the guests web server.

Thank-you for looking at this Perryg. I apologize, I have figured this out.

The problem was an issue with the Wireless card on the Laptop I was testing on. If I disable the Wireless, this works with a bridged connection as expected every time via the Wired adapter. What I have now done is setup Adaptor 1 as Host-only and a second Adaptor as NAT, because the people I expect to be running this VM (sales demo folks) will probably not have a wired connection available in the field. With this I get a workable solution with a host accessible IP to the guest that works as expected, and a guest that can "see" the internet via the NAT.

My apologies again for wasting your time on this.

Best regards,
