Guest Additions install fails

I'm running Windows 8 onto which I've installed Virtual Box 4.2.12 r.84980 running Win XP.

When I attempt to install Guest Additions to allow sharing of my folders I receive the following message:

Failed to install the Extension Pack C:/Users/Peter's Laptop/AppData/Local/Microsoft/Windows/Temporary Internet Files/Content.IE5/T9BNLDWA/Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-4.2.12-84980.vbox-extpack.

The installer failed with exit code 1: .

I've re-booted a few times but the message persists. Any advice for a non-techie much appreciated please!

Why are you installing it from the "temp internet files" folder? I wouldn't even know how to make it do that. IMHO you should download it to a normal folder before installing it. Sometimes VBox gets messed up if you don't get it right first time, in which case look in the Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox\extpack folder and delete the existing files.
