Ubuntu 12.04 guest very unstable on 64-bit Win 7

Hello,

I've been running 64-bit Ubuntu 12.04 on 64 bit Windows Professional for ~6 months (500 Gb HD / 6 Gb RAM) using VirtualBox 4.2.4, and frequently get the 'Unable to allocate and lock memory' warning, followed immediately by the 'A critical error has occurred while running the virtual machine' - both complaining about low host memory. I have tried giving the guest everything from 1 to 4 gb of memory, but to no avail. At the moment, I'm just trying to run

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update
and

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get upgrade
the 1st command completes fine, but the 2nd command always results in a critical error (I've tried running the VM with various amounts of memory as above). I'm not running any other software on Windows (I know that Firefox uses a lot of memory, and had wondered if having that running at the same time caused issues).

Any suggestions how to resolve the issue?

As requested (below), I've now attached the latest logs from the VM.

Post the guests log file (as an attachment)
See Online Users Manual for the location of the file.

VirtualBox VM 4.2.4 r81684 win.amd64 (Oct 26 2012 18:55:21) release log
00:00:01.075342 Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack (Version: 4.2.8 r83876; VRDE Module: VBoxVRDP)
Ensure that you have matching version - if you don't, you WILL encounter stability issues.
