Vbox 4.2.12 r84980
Host: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Guest: Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64-bit

I noticed that Unity 3D support is now broken. It had been working fine. I'm not sure exactly when it broke - if it was a vbox update or an ubuntu update.

A similar problem happened a couple of years ago (viewtopic.php?f=6&t=45549&p=205997#p205997), and I've followed similar steps to resolve the problem to no avail.

All the packages (headers, build essential, etc.) are installed. I've reinstalled guest additions several times and no errors are reported.

Any suggestions?

Attached is some additional info...

What stands out to me is in xorg.0.log:

[ 14.937] (EE) [drm] drmOpen failed.
[ 14.937] (EE) VBoxVideo(0): DRIScreenInit failed, disabling DRI.

OK, I can confirm that this is a regression error. 3D Support works in 4.2.6. Will test 4.2.8 and 4.2.10 to determine when it broke.

OK, the source is 4.2.12 Guest Additions. 3D Support still works on 4.2.12 VBox with 4.2.10 Guest Additions (which is not recommended, AFAIK). Once I update to 4.2.12 Guest Additions, 3D Support fails.

What now?

There were issues with guest additions and discussed in the 4.2.12 release topic and they posted a 4.2.13 Guest addition to fix that
viewtopic.php?f=1&t=55091&start=30#p254681 but that download was short lived because of internal time limits for files.
You can simply use the 4.2.10 GAs for now and the next release due out soon will have the fix.

Note: the issue was really a kernel bug that was fixed, but at about the same time VBox released so it was not caught.

Excellent. Thanks for the explanation. Is there a way to revert back to 4.2.10 GA (shy of reverting to 4.2.10 VBox and then installing 4.2.12)?

Yes there is. Simply install 4.2.12 and do not install the GAs or if you already have 4.2.12 uninstall the guest additions and install the 4.2.10 GAs. You can get them from the link below.
http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualb ... 4.2.10.iso

Put them where you can find them and place the iso in the virtual CD/DVD and boot the guest. You will need to use the file manager to start the install but it should work fine.
