I'm not sure where to post this because a search on the error code did not return any results. I find it a bit odd that you can take an error code from an application and do a search in the application help and not get any results. Why would a program have undocumented error output? I don't think I spelled it wrong or anything like that.

I had a working VM of windows XP that I exported to an OVA file in preparation to making a hardware change here. After I re-installed my OS (XP sp3) I did an "import appliance" using the OVA file and tried to start the VM. On startup, I get this error. Does anyone have any idea what the problem is or what I might try to get it going again?

The error means that either you have not enabled hardware virtualization in the PCs bios or something else is using it.
I find that hard to understand if you exported and imported on the same machine and the only thing that changed was a reload of the host OS. Sure there isn't something else we should know?

Sorry, I thought I made it clear the I exported the VOC files prior to a hardware change. I changed my motherboard/CPU/RAM and then reinstalled the OS. I found the location in the bios to turn on virtualization and the VM will start now. Thanks for the tip.

Something odd is happening now in that I am getting firewall alerts in the host OS from applications running in the guest. I thought I set this up so that the guest would have it's own IP and network connection and not be using the connection of the host. I installed a firewall in the guest for this reason. I used the VM for a while before the reinstall, so I don't get why this would be working differently now. Under networking, it lists NAT as the adapter. I don't think that is right, I think it should be bridged. Is that correct if I want the VM to have it's own IP on my local net? Why would that have changed when saving to a VOC file?

While I have not used export and import in a mighty long time I believe it did retain the network settings, but that is never a 100% surety.

Since the new storage format where everything is actually stored in its own folder along with its control file (*.vbox) I find it easier to just copy the folder to a safe location and copy back to the new location, use the VirtualBox add feature to add it back and it is just like I left it.

From the sounds of it though you probably want Bridged mode.

When you import a VM it will ask you for the new networking settings, they are not imported as-is. So if you don't remember giving them out, they were simply set to their default values.

Ok, I have got this working again. I did have to change the network settings to bridged mode.

I still find it odd that this error message is not to be found in the help, or in a search of this website (using the website search field at the upper right). When searched the error message on Google, I got a number of hits for posts in this forum, so why does the search engine on the forum not find topics on its own board?

I would believe that would be some kind of bad search filter that is a bit overreacting I'll report it to the admins anyway.
