Complete n00b to VMs.......

Hi, Im a complete n00b to VMs, tried MSs built in Win 8 version but the networking wasn't working with Linux guests I tried.

I found VIrtualBox and really like it. Im having this one issue though after creating the machine. I made a Linux Mint guest, It runs fine and networking is working as well. Thing is how do I get say a file I download from the guest to the host? I see the machine in windows networking window but if I try and access it, it says can not find path. Am I missing something? What settings do I have to change for this? Or is there a better way? Such as a shared folder that I can just copy files too and then use them in windows to transfer to my storage drive? I see there is a share folder option in virtual box and specified my storage drive but I don't see it in the guest.

Thx, but I tried that, I created the share folder in options, then tried mounting it through terminal in Linux and it says it does not exist. Am I missing something?

Must be.

I know that all the proper instructions are within that topic.

Guest additions must be installed in the guest.
You must watch case of letters.

Well I still get the error, I put the exact commands into terminal.

Does it matter where I create the folder in virtualbox settings?

From the hosts terminal/command window type VBoxManage showvminfo <VM Name> --details and post here. Replace <VM Name> with the actual name of the VM. Use " " if the name has a space in it.

Note if the host is Windows you need to be in the directory that has VBoxManage.exe for the command to work.

As well as the guests log file (as an attachment)

Reboot the host and run the VBoxManage showvminfo command again to show the guest settings

The log files are in the same folder that has the <guest>.vdi in a sub-folder logs. All I need it the vbox.log not the ones with numbers.

The first one in guide, I named my folder Share and created it on windows desktop


sudo mount -t vboxsf share ~/Share

I put that in terminal in Linux and it did not see the path.

Ahh I see should I have put the whole path including C and desktop before share?

Linux is case sensitive you called the Share, Share not share
Now assuming you created the mount point in your home directory and called it Share the statement would be as follows

sudo mount -t vboxsf Share ~/Share

Maybe that's what I did wrong I don't think I opened the terminal in Home directory.

Ill recreate VM again and try that and post results.

You will need to do more than just be in the home folder. You need to create the mount point.

mkdir ~/share

If you want the name to be share.

That did the trick, thx bro!!! Can I change the directory to storage drive and dl directly to it? I made the share drive on SSD which is small I want to send it to regular HDD
