How to Move Vm

Post by makealife123 »

hello all people, I am a new virtual box user and I need help.
I recently Installed windows xp guest machine on my windows 7 host desktop, it installed successfully, but now I have bought a laptop and I want to use that same windows xp guest on my laptop, I did follow the basic steps of copying the folder, also tried exporting importing but I am not able to run my windows xp guest on my laptop. Please explain me how to run it successfully with no errors,

In the "Howto" area: Moving a VM.

Also, please make topic titles more descriptive.

Need assistance about the link you gave,
The information I saw is not easy for me since I am a new VM user, It will be better if you explain it further to ease the task,
So I want to ask few questions about these:

The basic process for moving VMs created by VirtualBox v4.0.0 or later is to copy the VM folder to your preferred location, then use the GUI's Machine|Add menu item to register the .vbox file (in the VM folder) from its new location.
1. where we find this VM folder
2. Where is this GUI's Machine|Add menu
3. and where is this .vbox file

I think as you can see from my questions it is clear that I am a total newbie in this virtual box and like every one in the beginning, I need some assistance, I hope you guide me next time by easy demonstrations, a video will be ideal for that,

Waiting for the response

>1. where we find this VM folder
The VM folder is <userdoc>\VirtualBox VMs\vmname.

>2. Where is this GUI's Machine|Add menu
In the menu of the front end. The front end is the program you use to create and launch VMs. It's probably what you think of as "VirtualBox".

>3. and where is this .vbox file
It's vmname.vbox, and it's in the VM folder. If you use a Windows host then make sure the host is configured to not "Hide extensions for known file types".

I have no time or interest to make video tutorials. I will leave that to others.

ps. Moving this discussion to "Windows Hosts", since the nature of the guest is not relevant to your question.

Just my 2cents on this : if you require more information than what was already given to you, I am afraid you shouldn't touch anything that does advanced technical task, just like the very virtualization you are trying to use.
Virtualbox might make it look like this should be (very) easy, it still requires understanding and some basic knowledge of how to perform tasks on your computer.
Such forum is not about teaching you about how to use a computer but help you use the advanced technical part of Virtualbox.

Seeking help is fine, but you're not telling us what is happening when you say "does not work". (a lot) more information would be useful here.
Also, please read Minimum information needed for assistance.. In this case, it would be useful to get the VM log on both computers, aswell as the guest config output.

I see that you ignored my suggestion to disable "Hide extensions for known file types". That will be responsible for at least some of your confusion, e.g inability to find the .vbox file.

sorry about that,
Now I emplimented upon your saying and yes now I do see an xml file named with VirtualBox.xml it was not showing previously.
I think now I need to open the virtual box on my new pc and go to machine menu and then go to add and then upload this VirtualBox.xml file and also I copy the machine folder which I gace you screenshot also to my new pc vm folder and then no worries.

VirtualBox.xml has not been mentioned by me, you should leave it alone.

Also, I just noticed that you changed the default machine folder to "D:\VIRTUAL BOX". Overriding the default location for VM folders seems a risky thing to do for someone who had to ask me what a VM folder is! In any case you should look for your VM folders in that parent folder, assuming you changed that default before you created your VM. Any VMs which were created before you changed that setting can be found in "C:\Users\MILANO\VirtualBox VMs\vmname"). Your picture of the XP2 VM is one such.
