Ubuntu 13.04 not starting after upgrading from 12.10

Just when I finally had 12.10 running again due to the Guest additions problem of virtual box 4.2.12 (which I had a hard time figuring out that the GA was the problem), and I finally could get into my Ubuntu 12.10, I got a message to upgrade to 13.04, so as a nice boy I let it upgrade... boy do I get to start hating linux badly, as after upgrading to 13.04 it isn't starting anymore..

Windows 7 64bit host (running a 32bit ubuntu), videomem set to 128, 3d enabled (even without it it didn't start).
host has a Nvidia GT430 card, Intel P4 3.6Ghz HT, 4GB mem (client is set to 1GB mem)..

All I see is first a full purple screen, then after a while it turns black, the window resizes to a much larger size, I can see the client mousecursor, then it resizes back to a smaller window and just stays black.
<ALT><F2> works to get a terminal window.

I have tried the following which was said in another thread:

Code: Select all

/usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test -p
but it gave Error: unable to open display

IMHO upgrading to 13.04 is a huge mistake. They changed so many things that the residual from the previous build is more than likely going to cause conflicts. Anyway to your problem. Try disabling 3D in the guests settings and see if that will at least get you to a desktop. From the sounds of it their new display drivers are causing you an issue. If you can not then get to a tty and post the results of the following

Code: Select all

ps aux | grep dkms
and

Code: Select all

glxinfo | grep OpenGL

the first command gives me:

<myusername> 2727 0.0 0.0 4428 808 tty2 S+ 22:36 0:00 grep --color=auto dkms

and the second give me the error: unable to open display again (but I did have to install mesa-utils first for the command to work)..

Well, I just updated because linux asked me to.. And linux is perfect according to most people who love linux.. but I had more problems with linux now in the last few weeks, than I ever had with my windows in the last 20 years (and as a developer I do a lot of weird things with windows hehe)..
LOL.. ahwel.. we'll figure this out I hope.. thanx for trying to help..

You can try the following

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install dkms build-essential linux-headers-$(uname -r)
then

Code: Select all

sudo /etc/init.d/vboxadd setup
Don't worry if the first command says it is already installed. You just need to make sure that you run the command.

first command did install some stuff and some stuff was already installed.

second command couldn't be found.. But I guess that's due to me having deinstalled the guest additions when I still had ubuntu 12.10 because of the 4.2.12 problems I had, and hadn't reinstalled it I guess with the fixed iso..

You want me to try to install the guest additions? (I have to do it through the terminal as the graphical interface isn't working).

Probably not going to help. If the GAs are not installed Ubuntu should actually use the gallium drivers to force software 3D. But being as the screen is black you probably don't even have the xorg-server working. At this point is is not going to be a VirtualBox issue but a botched upgrade and you might want to ask the Ubuntu folks what to do. I assume you don't have a backup you could use or take a snapshot before you upgraded.

Nope, I'll remember that next time.. Thanx for trying to help.. If I can find a solution I'll post it here just for the information...

FYI,

I decided to test an in place upgrade from 12.10 to 13.04 and sure enough it torked out and eliminated all of the xorg packages.
Boot to recovery, then select network to enable the network. then select dpkg to repair the build. Select it again to be sure everything was fixed.

Once you have that click resume and you should be back at the DT. Reinstall the GAs too.

haha cool,
This afternoon I tried the fix from this one as my host has a nvidia card:
http://falkvinge.net/2013/02/15/how-to- ... 0-quantal/

Now It starts with a the login and it does work, I see the default background after I logged in, but, I have no sidebar or topbar.. RIght mouse click does give me a popupmenu with the usual stuff (new folder/new document/ new terminal/ etc)..
Should I still try the recovery, and try the dpkg for getting the side/topbar back? or is there something else I should try?

No that's a different problem.

Disable the 3D acceleration in the guest settings and see if the launcher and top panel return.
Then install the new guest additions and see if you can turn it on and it still works.

sadly it didn't work, the guest additions are installed properly now (now I have a real full screen etc, so I'm not stuck to the 800x600 screen I had)..
tomorrow I'm gonna try some other stuff I found on the ubuntu forums, but I have not idea if it helps..
if you have any suggestions left I'm willing to try them..

again, thanx for trying to help..

I know you don't want to here this but it works for me. If you are having issues then there must be something missing.
dkms build-essential linux-headers-generic are what the OS requires to build the modules. Post the /var/log/vboxadd-install.log and /var/log/xorg.0.log

Yeah, I understand that it works for you, gathering from more posts it should be a solution..
But I won't give up, hehe...

Weird part from the next thing, is the fact it tries to load (or does have) the nvidia driver, even though I used the following (which also did something):

Code: Select all

/var/lib/dkms/vboxguest/4.2.13/source ->
                 /usr/src/vboxguest-4.2.13
Can you explain the 4.2.13 GAs? 4.2.12 is the latest official build.

the 4.2.12 GA's is what started the whole mess when I still was on 12.04, it has a bug and was later replaced with 4.2.13 through the forum. then I tried upgrading to 12.10 (before I knew what the problem was) to fix the fubar, but it didn't help, then I read on this forum the 4.2.12 GA had a problem, I removed it and 12.10 was starting again, but the first question I got was for upgrading to 13.04 so as the angel boy I am, I let it upgrade..
