Black Screen in ubuntu guest, on MacBook host, VM 4.2.12

Post by MarcGirod »

Hello,

Fron scratch installation on a MacBook Pro, Darwin 12.3.0.
I installed a VirtualBox 4.2.12, and in it ubuntu 12.04.2 desktop, i386
When I start, I get an error:

Code: Select all

The system is running in low-graphics mode
Your screen, graphics card, and input device settings
could not be detected correctly. You will need to configure these yourself.
and the virtual screen gets black.
I cannot get to a text mode, until I send the shutdown signal, at which time some white text comes briefly before shutdown.
No way to edit any configuration file on the virtual ubuntu.
I can run VBoxManage commands from a terminal, and read the VBox.log

Looking at the minimum information for assistance...
- I don't know what is a Guest Addition. I don't think I installed any (no 'Installed Extension Packs' in VBox.log)
- The host hardware is x86_64, and I may have picked a 32 bit version of ubuntu...
- From VBox.log: Host RAM: 8192MB total, 3871MB available

Thanks for any help.

Thanks...
Making the question helped me to solve it.
I installed a 64 ubuntu, and it works much better.
Maybe the error detection could be enhanced?

Thanks anyway.

Perhaps the existing VirtualBox v4.2.12 discussion thread would have helped you.
