Very slow Remote access to Virtual Machine
Very slow Remote access to Virtual Machine
Hey,
I installed Oracle Virtual box on Windows Server 2008 and a Virtual Machine with Windows 2007 professional.
Basically when I remote desktop or teamviewer into the machine, things start to lag. This happens over Lan as well as an outside connection.
Any ideas how to fix this?
Thanks!

Re: Very slow Remote access to Virtual Machine
Sorry
Version 4.2.12 r84980 - Yes I have Guest Additions installed
Host box is Windows 2008 r2, 64bit and has 16GB Ram. Virtual Machine has Windows 2007 Professional and 5GB Ram I have allocated
Attached the log.
Thank you!

Re: Very slow Remote access to Virtual Machine
Nothing specific in the logs, but you didn't provide a full session (including shutdown of the VM). Also, you didn't provide the guest config.
- I see your main .VDI is on the D:\ drive, anything specific about that drive? Is it an external drive?
- You use NAT it seems and you do port forwarding. You should try with Bridged aswell.
- Any particular reason for the 5GB Memory?

Re: Very slow Remote access to Virtual Machine
- D:\ Drive just because it is a 120GB SSD Drive and I thought it would be faster to have each Virtual Machine on it's own harddrive, especially a fast hdd.noteirak wrote:Nothing specific in the logs, but you didn't provide a full session (including shutdown of the VM). - I was told to use NAT from someone, seems to be working well. I do not know much about Bridged.
- I had 4gb and wanted to give 5gb to see if it made things faster, it hasn't. I also tried giving the Virtual Machine 3 CPU instead of 1 CPU. Again no change.
The guest machine runs 2 programs that are fairly resource heavy, so 4GB is probably needed (I have 16GB with 1 virtual machine at the moment so 4GB should be fine?)
What do you suggest I do now then to try and fix this slow remote issue. Thanks!

Re: Very slow Remote access to Virtual Machine
Nothing specific. I would think either the NAT mode - if you would switch to Bridged, it would directly bind with the physical NIC and make it appear as another PC on your LAN (so you need another IP address, etc).
The applications could be the issue too, if they are not compatible with remote desktop.

Re: Very slow Remote access to Virtual Machine
The application runs fine on Windows Server 2008, which I connect to over Remote Desktop. It lags very badly when I remote desktop to the virtual machine.
So it has to be something to do with the Virtual Box..
I do not have a second IP address at the moment. So is there nothing I can do?

Re: Very slow Remote access to Virtual Machine
Well it's very hard to say. If you can't use Bridged with another IP (I assume you're on a dedicated server in a datacenter), I would use Host-Only mode with routing & NATing, and see if that works better.
If you're on a Windows host, you would do routing + NATing by simply sharing your internet connection (in the NIC properties).

My server it at home, not in a datacenter.
Where do I change these settings to "Host-Only mode" I dont even know what this is

Re: Very slow Remote access to Virtual Machine
If you don't know, I would strongly suggest you read the User Manual on VB Networking.
Also, if your server is at home, there is no reason you can't spare an IP for your VM, unless you can tell me why - Bridged is the best mode for what you are trying to achieve.

Re: Very slow Remote access to Virtual Machine
With bridged can I remote desktop from outside the network?
I travel a lot and also have clients that are overseas

Re: Very slow Remote access to Virtual Machine
Yes you can - you actually can with every mode except internal.
It all comes down to the networking configuration.
