Windows 8 failing to get past startup screen after update

Having updated to 4.2.12, I've started up my virtual machine but it just freezes on the start up screen. I've attached an image of the hang screen, VB application itself is responsive but it doesn't get beyond there.

I tried reloading the older version of the VB I was running but suffered the same problem. I didn't make sure that the edition of the guest additions matched up, would that make a difference?

I've since downloaded the guest additions for 4.2.12, run it off that in the 4.2.12 guest additions .iso file.

I'm running it off Mac OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.3 and the guest OS was Windows 8 (I believe 64 bit). I've attached also the log file.
