bridge adapter when there is static ip configured on host

Hello,
I have one physical NIC on my windows host machine with static ip (ex: 10.16.8.3) configured. I have a bridged network adapter with my physical NIC selected on my virtualbox. I startup my Linux guest. It doesn't have an ip for he bridge adapter since there is not DHCP. I manually configure a static in same subnet (ex: 10.16.8.4) which is not in use. I am unable to ping between host and guest and others in the network also cannot reach my host and guest.
What am I missing? If I change my NIC to obtain ip address automatically everything seems to work. But I wont be able to use DHCP and am only allowed to use static ip.
Thanks
