[SOLVED] Snapshots missing?

Post by stephenp »

Fixed it by using CloneVDI to clone (and create a new UUID) the latest snapshot. Then I created a new machine and directed it to use the new image made from CloneVDI. I had to let Win7 do a Windows Repair before it would boot but now I'm golden... and learned a lot of lessons along the way :)

----------------

Hi there,

I had to upgrade my Host computer harddrive. Both old and new host are Win7 64bit. After the new install I was unable to open my VirtualBox machine (also Win7 64) as I would get an error telling me "Medium...cannot be closed because it is still attached to a1 virtual machines." Eventually after duplicating the virtual machine to a new physical harddrive I got it to boot, only to find it's an OLD version. But the only working virtual machine does not have any snapshots. The non-working machine has a folder with recent snapshots. Is it possible to link the snapshots from the non-working machine to the working machine in order to use the snapshots?

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

After reading more about this I suspect my virtualbox machine was in a sleep state before I moved it to the next physical hard drive...

I'm attempting to clone a snapshot now to see what happens...

Confusing chronology, until I understood that the edit to your first message had been done after you posted your 2nd message. Perhaps posting a third message would have been clearer than editing the first.

If your VM was in a sleep state, and assuming you registered the VM using Machine|Add or simply restored the old VirtualBox.xml, then right click "Discard saved state" would possibly have fixed the problem. However, as you've seen, snapshots generally get in the way when you need to do backup or recovery, so it's probably just as well you got rid of them, whether you needed to or not.
