Default username/password for Ubuntu 12.04 image
I just installed the Ubuntu 12.04 image - everything is working fine - but it is asking me for login details and I don't know what they are. I've searched quite a lot on the main site and the forums, and can't find anything.
Is there a default account set up, or is there something else I need to do?

It is asking for the login and password that was used to create the image. Did you create the image? If not then you need to contact whom ever did.

It won't let me post the address because I'm a new user, but I got it from virtual box dot org.

Post a screen shot of what it is asking you. Use the upload attachment below your reply screen

Screenshot attached. I simply added the image that I downloaded from vitualbox dot org slash wiki slash downloads into VirtualBox, and this is what it comes up as. When I boot the machine it briefly gives me a GRUB menu, then loads back to the login screen.

VirtualBox.org does not provide such images. virtualboxes, or some other location does but we have no idea what they used for the login and password. You need to either contact them or seek assistance from Ubuntu on how to reset the root password. Better yet download the installable CD from Ubuntu.com and install it yourself and then you set the password.

Thanks for the responses, I'll try just installing Ubuntu from scratch on a fresh virtualbox.
Since it's letting me post links now, the exact location that I downloaded the file from was :
https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads
That page looks like it is a community website owned by Oracle, and associated with these forums. Is this not true?

Sure that is the link to get VirtualBox but not the Ubuntu server that you were showing in the screen shot. The images (various operating systems) are obtained and installed by you and you provide the user logon information during install.

Oh right. Wow, I was being stupid. I could have sworn that's the page I got the image from, but it's not. I must have closed the tab for the page I got it from. Anyway, I just installed Ubuntu Server from scratch and it works fine. Now I just have to work out how to get networking set up, but I'm sure that's covered elsewhere.
Thanks for being patient with the silly new subscriber!
