slow git in linux guest for one mac user, but not another

Post by billm »

I've got a problem that I'm pretty stumped on. We have been trying to create a standard disc image for developers to use. We've got a mix of windows and mac users. The problem really shows itself with a huge slowness in using git.

For the guest we are using centos 6.3. I created the image on my win7 machine and have been using it flawlessly for months. I cloned this image to mac user #1 and it works well for him. We have a large dev project. After cloning it inside the guest, issuing the command 'git status' is fast for both me on win7 and for mac user #1.

I cloned the same image to mac user #2. Set it up the same and cloned our project inside the guest. issuing 'git status' is slow as heck.

The two mac users have similar hardware. the biggest difference is mac #1 has OS 10.6.8 and #2 has 10.8.3. Snow leopard and mountain lion? I'm not a mac guy :)

Any idea on what the issue could be?

just a wild guess because it's been so long since I've used 10.6.8 but I think you have to explicitly tell 10.6.8 to boot into 64bit mode. It's hard to say much since you said they were "similar" in hardware but didn't mention what the hardware differences were. it may be a hardware difference or the fact one Mac may be running in 64bit mode and the other in 32bit mode.

I'll look into the 32 vs 64 thing. I'm really not familiar with macs, so i'm not even sure what is important about them.

Both macs are running a 64bit kernel

you might also want to check if both Macs are 2-core or 4 core, memory differences etc.

I didn't see that in the txt files... I just see the guest is 64bit.

You say "git status" is slow but what about the machine in general? Run "top" on both guest and host and see what the cpu load/etc is like.
