I have the exact same problem. Cant get "host-Only Adapter to work on the mac I use at work. I will try running this on the terminal to see if anything happens.
sudo /Library/StartupItems/VirtualBox/VirtualBox restart
to be continued...

Re: Cannot create host-only network
I have the same problem when running VirtualBox on my MacPro host. I cant get the network adapter to switch to Host-only without VB saying "Invalid settings detected."
I tried running the command "sudo /Library/StartupItems/VirtualBox/VirtualBox restart" in the terminal as suggested above. I relaunched VB but still no success. really wish there was a way to fix this bc I really cannot figure out how to ssh to the guest OS (Ubuntu Server) from my Mac Host. If anyone can help me with this that would be great. Ive seen many people with this problem but no solutions.
If anyone has any way of connecting from host to guest thru SSH without a "host-only adapter" that would be helpful. It would help if I had used a Mac before...

Re: Cannot create host-only network
Also have a Mac and the same problem with mininet VM. VirtualBox restart didn't help for me.

See viewtopic.php?f=8&t=34396
Worked for me.
vboxnet0 did not appear until I pressed the top icon/button on the right.

Re: Cannot create host-only network
This worked for me. It may have something to do with the recent Mavericks update.
Open Terminal and run this:
sudo /Library/StartupItems/VirtualBox/VirtualBox restart
All should be good now!
