NS_ERROR_CALL_FAILED (0x800706BE)

Post by rjkfsm »

Hi,

I just installed VirtualBox and ran it for the first time. I created a virtual machine with the wizard and tried to modify the settings so that I could boot a CD and load my guest operating system. When I click on any of the settings (storage, video, whatever) and regardless of the guest OS I use, I get the same error. I get a dialog box that says: Failed to open a session for the virtual machine. When I click on details, it gives me: NS_ERROR_CALL_FAILED (0x800706BE)

Any help would be appreciated.

What else does the dialogue box say?
What is the host and what is the guest?

The dialog box doesn't give any more information. Sorry. I also have launched it from the CLI and I get no messages there either.

The host is Linux and the guest is irrelevent. This occurs in the main application window before a guest is launched. I have tried multiple guests. As I stated in the OP, this occurs when I try to change settings regardless of the guest OS.

Have you installed the Extension Pack?

What extension pack? Are you refering to the guest additions?

Sorry for the delay in responding. I wanted to check a few things and see if I was able to solve it myself.

I am running VirtualBox version 4.1.24 and I have not yet install the additions in the guest. I am not sure what "Host and Guest make" is, but the host has 2GB of RAM and the guest has 1GB available. Attached is the guest log file.

This error comes up when I try to configure the VirtualBox host.

Well, I have upgraded to 4.2.12. My distro had marked 4.1.24 as the newest stable release.

Now the application won't launch at all.
me@server ~ $ VBoxManage list
VBoxManage: error: Failed to create the VirtualBox object!
VBoxManage: error: Code NS_ERROR_FACTORY_NOT_REGISTERED (0x80040154) - Class not registered (extended info not available)
VBoxManage: error: Most likely, the VirtualBox COM server is not running or failed to start.
me@server ~ $
So.... how and where do I check the COM server?

Your host is Gentoo. I don't recall seeing a Gentoo release from VirtualBox.org. Gentoo ports their own version of VirtualBox and probably where you are going to need to get information on how to fix this.

Thank you. If I find resolution, I will post it here.
