Trouble with Ubuntu 13.04 and Guest Additions

Hi to All!

I'm using VB since 2010, I installed it on my old notebook, virtualizing at last Ubuntu 11.04. Any try to use next version (11.10 and so on) was unsuccesful, probably due to the new GUI of Ubuntu.
Now I bought a new notebook, Core i5-12GB Ram. I created a VM with Ubuntu 13.04, everything went ok during installation, so I've got my VM functional.

Troubles come when I install also Guest Additions. Infact after the restart I can't use Ubuntu. The screen displays just the background. I can use "Right-Click" to show contextual menu and perform some actions, such as create a folder and opening it, but nothing more than this.
Does something change in the last 2 years about Guest Addition installation??

You're pretty much going to make sure you are using version 4.2.12 of VirtualBox and install the 4.2.12 guest additions (in the guest)

Then I am going to need to see the guests log.

Is this Ubuntu or the new Ubuntu Gnome?

I don't think the screen shot is necessary at this point. I'm fairly sure I know what they are seeing and what actually was fixed in the 4.2.12 release, or should I said was supposed to be fixed. You can also try to open a terminal. ctrl-alt-t type glxinfo | grep OpenGL and post the results.

I created a LOG, but it's too long to be pasted here, too big to be uploaded. I pasted it on pastebin, how can I share it with you?

I tried the thing on the terminal, but it says "The application glxinfo isn't installed".

I can add a new information.

I let the screen go on standby, so Ubuntu asked for the user password, allowing me to change user.
Changing user, and selecting "Guest User" everything seems ok.

But the strange thing is that I didn't done anything on my account, just installed the OS and the Guest Additions.

For some reason Windows is not actually using it. See section of the log.

Code: Select all

00:00:00.791942 OpenGL Info: Render SPU: GL_VENDOR: Microsoft Corporation
00:00:00.791958 OpenGL Info: Render SPU: GL_RENDERER: GDI Generic
00:00:00.791962 OpenGL Info: Render SPU: GL_VERSION: 1.1.0
00:00:00.791966 OpenGL Info: Render SPU: GL_EXTENSIONS: GL_WIN_swap_hint GL_EXT_bgra GL_EXT_paletted_texture
00:00:00.793382 Shared crOpenGL service loaded.
You can uncheck the 3D acceleration in the guest settings -> display section and see if you get the launcher bar and can actually use the guest. If you can you then need to find out why Windows is not passing the ATI card and is using its proprietary Microsoft drivers.

When you installed the guest additions you at that point enabled the 3D acceleration instead of software rendering.

That is why I was asking for you to run the glxinfo and see if the guest was using gallium or chromium.
