Re: Unable to install Guest Additions automatically or manua
There is no file in the guest called "VBoxGuestAdditions". It sounds to me like you have found a copy of the VBoxGuestAdditions.ISO file on the host. It's the guest you should be looking at, and the correct file to find is called "VBoxWindowsAdditions.exe". However your Windows guest is probably configured to "Hide extensions for known file types" - so I advise you to disable that feature in the guest folder settings, allowing you to identify files safely and accurately.

Re: Unable to install Guest Additions automatically or manua
Okay so I found out how to do it finally. But when installing the guest additions it ALWAYS fails at install files for Windows 2000/XP/Vista Installation aborted.
So then it just stops how do I get around this?

Can you post a screenshot of the installer window?

Re: Unable to install Guest Additions automatically or manua
It still looks to me like you may be trying to run the VBox GAs installer on the host.

Re: Unable to install Guest Additions automatically or manua
Alright I don't think I am but just in case I will try to clarify everything I do.
1. Open computer then run Oracle VM Virtualbox (Computer is a Mac with the latest OS for macs)
2. Start up the, what I believe to be, the guest. This is Windows 7 which we created a VM for and installed.
3. Run in safe mode.
4. Find the GA and run them
5. Click to enable 3D support
6. Next next yada yada
7. Get this error.
So I am running it in the guest correct? Because the host would be if I were trying to install it on the Mountain Lion OS? Or am I doing something wrong.
My understanding is that Mountain Lion is the Host, and Windows 7 is the guest am I wrong in assuming this?
Sorry I'm not a huge tech guy..

Re: Unable to install Guest Additions automatically or manua
you don't have to run the Windows 7 guest in safe mode to install the guest additions. That may actually be part of the problem.

In order to install the 3D support you have to install in safe mode. The same thing happens regardless though

Re: Unable to install Guest Additions automatically or manua
btw, looking at your screenshot it looks like you ran the x86.exe file. did you install Windows 7 as a 32bit install? and under the VirtualBox General tab is Windows 7 or Windows 7 (64bit) listed?

Re: Unable to install Guest Additions automatically or manua
It makes me go in safe mode. And yes both are listed three options are listed 64 bit x86 and one with neither description.
It would not let me install GA on the 64 bit even though that is what I installed and the same thing happens on the x86 and the last one. The disc that was used to install windows 7 had all versions on it

Re: Unable to install Guest Additions automatically or manua
you can't switch between 32bit and 64bit once Windows was installed. if you had Windows 7 (64bit) selected when you first installed it that's what you have to stay with. try right clicking on the VirtualBoxAdditions.exe file and run as Administrator.Confusedfriend wrote:It makes me go in safe mode. Yeah I'm aware that I cannot switch I was just stating what I had already done.
I have already tried that and it did not work, same error.

Re: Unable to install Guest Additions automatically or manua
I don't know what to tell you then. Other than trying to install WIndows from scratch. In other words delete the VM from VirtualBox and create a new machine. I didn't have any problems installing Windows 7 as a guest and adding the guest additions. As a matter of fact I'm typing from it now.
