.vdi File Wrong Permissions

After changing nothing major, I am suddenly receiving the following error when I try to open my Ubuntu VM:

Failed to open a session for the virtual machine 120501_Captain2nix.

Failed to open image 'C:\Users\cmfreeman.LBL\VirtualBox VMs\120501_Captain2nix\120501_Captain2nix.vdi' for writing due to wrong permissions (VERR_VD_IMAGE_READ_ONLY).

Failed to attach driver below us! Image is read-only. (VERR_VD_IMAGE_READ_ONLY).

AHCI: Failed to attach drive to Port0 (VERR_VD_IMAGE_READ_ONLY).

Result Code: E_FAIL (0x80004005)

I have been Googling this problem for a couple of hours and none of the fixes I have found work for me:

• The vdi file is not read only
  its permissions are apparently totally open to all users
  nothing changes if I install VirtualBox as administrator
  nothing changes if I run VirtualBox as administrator

You say nothing major changed but you do not say what was changed. Sometimes the the simplest thing causes permission issues.
You could try to use the system restore to a point before you changed what ever it was you changed.

Of course you're right. After thinking about it, the only change (other than editing some Word files) was that I installed the Windows update which required that I restart my machine. After restarting, I opened VirtualBox, and encountered this problem.

You could try to use the system restore to a point before you changed what ever it was you changed.

I'm considering restoring to the point before I performed the Windows OS update, but I've never done anything like this before and don't really understand the risks.

I haven't used Windows hosts in years but when I did it worked as it should. I don't recall a single time when it failed or caused more problems then I already had.
