USB Device not recognized.

Greetings all.

I'm new to VirtualBox and Mac OS both, so please bear with me if my terminology is not quite correct.

I am trying to have my guest OS (Windows XP) recognize an external USB harddrive (Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex). The drive is good, and my Mac OS can see it, browse, and manipulate files just fine. I've searched around a bit and found this isn't an uncommon problem, but none of the common solutions seem to be working for me. I've checked or tried:
  • Downloading and installing the Extension Pack
  • Checking the the 2.0 controller under the virtual machine's settings
  • Verified that I am set up with a single CPU on the virtual machine.
  • Created a filter for the USB device and ensured it wasn't mounted by the Host OS
  • Tried using the Force, (This is the drive you are looking for...)
I have another drive, a Seagate FreeAgent Go, that works fine and is picked up instantly by the Guest OS, so I'm not sure what I'm missing. Any insights would be most appreciated.

What file system did you choose when you formatted the drive?

Both the Guest OS system drive and the USB drive are NTFS.

Are you connecting it with the USB 2.0 or the USB 3.0 interface adapter? VirtualBox doesn't support USB 3.0.

That's a thought.

The drive itself is USB 3.0, but it's backwards compatible. My last computer only supported 2.0 and the drive worked fine, just not to 3.0 speeds.
