Problem with Linux Guest

Post by Trysis »

I have a Windows 8 host computer and have been trying to install at least 1 Linux guest. However, there seems to be a problem with the guest additions, or maybe the guests themselves. Whenever I correctly install the guest additions (which takes a while because I am completely new to Linux) and restart the VM, it has a fatal error. For Ubuntu, I have tried deleting the VM and installing another one. Whenever it finished installing, it had a fatal error. I even tried downloading and installing a new ISO of Ubuntu. For Fedora, it was most of the same things. I had few problems when I installed a Windows 7 VM, including guest additions, so it might just be Linux guests.

My Ubuntu version is 12.10, my Fedora version is 18, and my VirtualBox version is 4.2.10.

I didn't know whether to put this under Windows hosts or Linux guests, as I'm not sure which caused the problems, so I put it under Linux guests.

You are using the 4.2.10 r84104 version, which had a corrupted guest additions ISO and install.
Download the 4.2.10 again (r84105) or the 4.2.12 which just got releaed, and give it a shot again.

I just upgraded to 4.2.12 and am still having the problem, at least in Ubuntu. I was also having the problem in whatever version I upgraded from before I had 4.2.10, I forget the exact version, but it was the one right before. I found out the problem is an unhandled Win32 exception, but that seems like a general error, so it doesn't really help a whole lot. I uploaded the new log for Ubuntu.

"Unhandled exception" is a software error (usually C++) from a program running under the guest OS. It doesn't indicate a problem with the VM. Without details of the exception, or what module crashed, there isn't a lot of facts to go on.

How would I find the details or what module crashed? I attached the logs, what else should I attach? Sorry I'm pretty new to VirtualBox and am somewhat proficient with stuff like this, but not really.

When I tried to debug it, Visual Studio couldn't handle it. It had an error setting it up, then when it finished setting up there was an unhandled exception. I'm not really surprised, I was just seeing what would happen.

Was the 4.2.10 r84104 guest additions ISO corrupted for all VM OSs, or just the Linux ones, or some of the Linux ones? Also, if you upgrade VirtualBox, then upgrade the Guest Additions in one of the guests that had that version, should everything be OK? Also, what were the problems with it? I have a Windows 7 OS and it has that corrupted version of guest additions installed. It didn't crash like my Linux guests, but I want to know if there's anything to worry about.

I just realized a possible reason why my guest additions on Windows 7 don't seem to have messed anything up. It may be because I didn't install them in safe mode on the guest, so they weren't actually installed but I thought they were. I don't want to test this, though.

I don't think they're on 4.12. What has outdated what? I'm sorry but your comment was very confusing.
