4.2.10: Can't select CD drive for virtual CD driive

I have a MacBook pro with an external CD drive connected via Firewire 800. When mapping qa virtual CD drive I cannot select this drive - Virtual lists a choice in the pull-down menus for the internal Mabook CD drive but not the one plugged in. This worked in older versions of Virtualbox at some point in the past.
