I used a netinstall for Debian (Guest) and it took an overnight download to install it on an iMac7,1 with 2 GHz, 6GB memory, and OSX 10.7.5 host. I like Debian very much. This is the first time I have used Linux and am trying to learn the shell commands. Some software I would like to use only comes on Linux and Windows. I have 2 years experience using VirtualBox with Windows XP. There were no problems with that installation.
My goal is to install guest additions in Debian so I can adjust the screen size and have other benefits. I downloaded Debian-6.0.7-kfreebsd-amd64-netinst.iso and did a separate download for VBoxGuestAdditions_4.2.10.iso while bridged to my Apple Airport wireless internet connection. The method I used to install guest additions was exactly the way I did it with the Windows installation. The help file instructions were also followed that were specifically for Debian. Several shell command routines from this website were used with no luck. This Debian install is a recent installation as of March 30th.
In Debian, I cannot mount the CDROM drive or the guest additions .iso file. I have the guest additions .iso file in the downloads section of Debian. I have tried for several hours everything that I can think of. In the Oracle VM VirtualBox Manager, I clicked on Storage and have the VBoxGuestAdditions_4.2.10.iso file attached to "Controller: IDE". I must be missing something...
Would someone be able to point me in the right direction? Thanks for your time.

Re: Guest Additions will not install with Debian
First of all, only use the Guest Additions ISO provided with your VBox Installation. You can find the file at
/usr/share/virtualbox/VBoxGuestAdditions.isoYou can then following this guide for all the required steps
Hyperbox - Virtual Infrastructure Manager - https://apps.kamax.lu/hyperbox/

Re: Guest Additions will not install with Debian
@steve723,
Your issue has to do with a Linux host so if the following does not set you on the right track start a new topic there.
It sounds like you are running a Ubuntu fork which is not the same as the official build from here. The official build has the guest additions packaged with all installs. You need to either remove that one and install the one from virtualbox.org, or seek assistance from them.

Re: Guest Additions will not install with Debian
It turned out.
1. Virtualbox had to download the guest additions as they couldn't be found.
2. I keeped telling VB to mount them but they didn't work until I unmonted them. That seems strange. maybe there is a bug in VB so when you check to the box that is sopossed to show what file is mounted for the DVD you are really deselecting it. It just shows backwards. That's what I think is going on.
3. You do not have to be in safe mode to install all the 3d stuff as the manual says. I suspect the manual just hasn't been updated yet.
Unfortunatly Leadwerks Windows Trial version 3 seems not to work with VB it says something about GSL or what ever that is.
