I might mention that if you use a newer Linux distro that uses gnome3 you should enable 3D acceleration regardless. Most if not not all have done away with their 2D desktops and instead use gallium LLVM (software rendering). While this does work it produces a larger hit to the processor since it is managing all of the video rendering.
