Can't See Typed Characters

I have Ubuntu 12.04 running on a VB Windows 7 host. When I open Firefox begin to type in the search box, I can't see my characters until I move the mouse up and click on the tool bar area. Also, when I'm typing in the word processor, I can't see my words until I move the mouse up to the tool bar area and click. Any idea why this is happening?

I've searched this forum and the Internet and found nothing about this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't have that problem on any of my VMs.

I do quite often have a problem with FireFox on my host when it opens a "form" style web page, it does not always set the keyboard focus to the most obvious control on the form, e.g. on the form I'm typing into now, the big edit control is the most obvious, though note however that it is not the first control - or even the first edit control - on the form. I would guess that one control is marked as the default, but I have a feeling the FireFox doesn't always honor this. Perhaps a timing problem, i.e. looking for the tag before the page has finished loading.

In any case I don't see how this could be a VirtualBox issue, since selection of a window control is a software concept, not a (virtual) hardware one.

Well, since my post, I've actually uninstalled the guest extensions and rebooted my vm. Without the guest extensions installed, the keyboard works great. I've reverted to previous versions of VBox and Guest Extensions. Every thing works great until I install the extensions. Opening apps is slower and the keyboard loses focus.
