Thank you all! You guys are great. I feel I'm in the good hands of folks who care and who help. However, this thread is finished. Perry very insightfully recognized my problem straight away and supplied the needed information.

As you know, a VM wants to know what flavor of Linux is going to be on the vdisk. So, what flavor is Linux Mint 14? Is it Ubuntu, or is it Debian? The Linux Mint web site doesn't help and the documentation has conflicting information.

Well, Perry says that Linux Mint is Ubuntu unless it's Linux Mint LMDE, in which case it's Debian. But, Perry informed me, that apparently doesn't matter because the VM doesn't look at the flavor and doesn't care whether I select 'Ubuntu' or 'Debian' or 'Hello Kitty' in the drop-down list-box. So, why does it ask? I don't know.

What problem? (Back up in time to Monday...) After I installed it and configured it and rebooted it 5 or 6 times, I changed my VM's Linux flavor from 'Debian' to 'Ubuntu'. (Why did I do that? Because I read that should be 'Ubuntu' Why did I have it wrong? Because a Linux Mint guru told me it should be 'Debian'.) The next time I booted the VM, the desktop was black and the desktop icons had disappeared. So, I wiped out the VM and (forward to yesterday) I came here to find out whether I should choose 'Debian' or 'Ubuntu' in the drop-down list-box.

Next, I recreate the VM, reformat the vdisk, reinstall Linux Mint 14, and try again knowing that my desktop went black and the desktop icons disappeared because of something I did, not because of VBox. This will be the 3rd time. I've had a variety of seemingly-unrelated mishaps and I'm beginning to wonder whether Linux Mint is too fragile to use.

I promise you all that my ultimate project will interest you. This was just one false step. As Perry will confirm, I like to take it one step at a time, and when I post to a support forum, I like to ask the simplest, shortest question possible. This time it was "Can Linux Mint 14 Nadia be installed as a VirtualBox guest?"
