How to tranfer a guest VB with all snapsoots to another PC?

Post by statik »

Hello
I have tranfer the quest to another Pc but i can't start any snapshoot point.
For tranfer i do :

Code: Select all

1.) Copy your "VirtualBox VMs" folder from its current location which is "C:\" to any location you desire. ****If you don't know where to locate the folder, Open your VitualBox Manager and go to "Files,Preferences,General"... or just press "Ctrl-G" on your keyboard. There, you'll find "Default Machine Folder" path...(i.e. C:\Users\Dell\VirtualBox VMs). Now locate the folder on your computer and copy the "VirtualBox VMs" folder to new location. (Remember,Do not delete yet. Only copy, just incase.)

2.) Change your "Default Machine Folder" to the new location. ****If you don't know how, its the same place you located the previous folder "Files,Preferences,General"... or just press "Ctrl-G". Click the drop down options in front of "Default Machine Folder" -=- "Other" and toggle to select your "VirtualBox VMs" folder from the new location.

3.) Now go back to your VirtualBox Manager. Right click on your Guests and click "Remove". It'll pop up with 3 options, IMPORTANT: Click on "Remove only". (Remember,Do not delete anything yet).

4.) Now close your VirtualBox Manager. And then Right click on toolbar "Start Task Manager". Inside Task Manager, go to "Processes".... Check to see if "VBoxSVC.exe" is still running.... If yes, click on it and "End Process" ...If no,it has timed out and you're good to go. F5 to refresh your desktop.

5. Open your VirtualBox Manager again. Go to "Machine,Add". Your new location should be there automatically. If not, just locate,Then use the add feature to add your guests back one at a time. (select the *.vbox file).
When i load (restore) a snapshoot point , then guest Vms turn in Saved mode from Powerd and don't load , error :

Click on the snapshot that you want to open and discard the saved state.

After you've restored, and before starting, do the discard.

As I said : after you've restored your snapshot, do a discard state, and only after you can start your VM.

2) discard state the quest

After i start the quest.

The leaf marked "Current state" is what will start when you start the VM. Reverting to a snapshot only helps if you remain in the that same snapshot branch when you launch the VM. The pictures above show you chopping and changing between branches.

If I was you I would stop using snapshots since you clearly don't understand what branching snapshots do. Stick to full clones, they are much easier to understand.

Snapshot feature/facility creates only a delta update to the 'base' virtual disk, not an image replacement. The deltas, also known as differencing images, are not stand-alone images; they must be applied to the 'base' image in the hierarchy that they were created. The deltas may be merged with the 'base' image (time consuming if many deltas} or use the CloneVDI tool or the Virtual Machine may be cloned (v4.2), creating a new 'base' image.

Transfer the entire VM, not bits and pieces

That question has already been answered - multiple times I think.

A snapshot cannot be transferred on its own. It is only useful in the VM which created it, and therefore the entire VM must be transferred.

To transfer an entire VM to a new PC for the first time: make sure the VM is shut down (not suspended), then copy the entire VM folder, with contents, to the other PC, then use VirtualBox's Machine|Add... menu item on the other PC to register the VM there. In future if want to keep two PCs synced you should just copy over the contents of the VM folder - and again everything must be shut down at the time.
