hi,

I have a problem with usb devices. When i plug my usb device in and try to install it, it says:

Failed to attach the USB device Corsair Flash Voyager [1100] to the virtual machine Ubuntu_1.

Host OS is Win 7 64-bit and virtual machine is Ubuntu 11.10, virtualbox version is 4.2.10 + extension pack.
Usb filter did not solve my problem.

Do everything below that you have not already done. Maybe do it again anyway.

1. Install the VirtualBox Extension Pack (provides USB 2.0 support: note that the extension pack is NOT the Guest Additions).
2. With the VM shut down, create a USB filter (in VM settings|USB) to capture your device.
3. Boot up VM, when boot is finished, plug in device.
4. A "new hardware found" dialog will appear. This is actually VirtualBox on the HOST, wanting to install a filter driver in the HOST which redirects USB messages. Allow the driver to be installed automatically. You may need admin rights for this, I'm not sure.
5. Unplug the device, wait a few seconds, plug it in again. The guest should pick it up, as it should from now on.

Basically, always plug the device in after the guest has booted up.

I followed your instructions and succeeded with integrated web cam installation, but problem with flash memory still remains. Maybe im doing something wrong..

I've tried mpack instruction, but I don't get any new hardward found dialog, and the device is not ticked in the right-click USB menu while the message (when the mouse is over the device) says that the device is captured, but it's not.

I'm struggling with that issue since a couple of days, trying several tips:

• trying every combination of starting the VM, (un)plugging the device, rebooting, with(out) a filter (in VirtualMachine USB config)
• killing every processus on the host that may occupy the device
• using USB1.1 mode
• changing the filter
• killing VBoxSVC exe on the host

that I read from many posts (in this forum and elsewhere, even in a bug report discussion, sorry I cannot post links as it's my 1st post here).

The only thing I haven't been able to test is to downgrade the USB support from USB 3 to USB 2 since the BIOS of my computer doesn't seem to offer that feature (Dell Vostro 3560).
Note that I've been able to catpure the Card reader and the webcam Embedded to the laptop (certainly using USB 2 or 1.1) but no device "outside" the laptop.

I faced a similar issue when I upgraded to 4.2.10
Host: win XP
guest: Debian GNU/Linux 32 bits

I had to downgrade to 4.2.8 and associated extension pack to make it work.

So I was convinced that something was amiss with 4.2.10 and looked for others
who may have been affected similarly.

Then I found someone in Japan who posted that he/she found the
GuestAdditions tool included in downloaded win-installation-binary .exe seems to be corrupted.
It was advised that the GuestAdditions tool be downloaded separately.
Don't know if this fixes the USB problem, but the corruption seems to be real.
Others have followed up.

The Guest Additions ISO was indeed corrupted, a problem that was fixed within hours of the new release being available. If you downloaded the 84105 build then you did not get the corrupted ISO.

Of course there is another serious problem with your theory, and it's that the GAs have nothing whatever to do with USB.

I've tested both usb versions and it seems the problem is somewhere else.

I downgraded to version 4.2.8 with no luck.

I know this is not a solution, but I solved the problem using VMware Player instead (as this was a need for working reason, I have no time to dive into that issue any further).
I can attach and use withouy any trouble my USB dongle.

I had the same issue with my Vostro 3560. The only workaround I found was to uninstall the Intel USB3 drivers so my computer will use USB2.
The tradeoff is that your USB3 ports will work as USB2 so only do this if you are able to sacrifice USB3 speeds until there is a fix for it.

I did the following:
- Go to Control Panel -> Programs -> Uninstall a program
- Look for "Intel(R) USB3 Software...." (can't recall the exact name) and uninstall it.
- If you are using a USB keyborad or mouse, they may stop working. Just use your notebook's keyboard and touchpad.
- Go into your bios and make sure "USB Emulation" is disabled. (On my bios it was on the "Advance" menu).
- Done.
