Exported appliance larger than guest OS?

Post by blued »

Hi, I am on a Windows 7 x64 host (VB v4.2.10) and have always used the export appliance feature to back up my VMs and for its ability to compress/compact the end file. But lately I've found that an exported OS (XP guest) which only took up 1.67gb of space on a virtual dynamic drive came out as a 3.45gb ova file. What happened to the compression?! The original fresh install of this XP guest was around 1.5gb and was exported to a 475mb file. Why the massive difference?

I should note that I merged snapshots with the original and the VDI file is around 4.83gb. Yet the actual space used in the VM is still 1.67gb and with 3.23gb free space on drive.
