Clipboard not working in either direction

I have Virtualbox 4.2.10 running on OSX 10.8.2. Guest OS is Ubuntu 12.10 Desktop with guest additions successfully installed. I have tried all clipboard settings including 'Biderectional' but copy and paste does not work in either direction.
I have also seen the exact same problem with Ubuntu 12.0.4 on a Windows 7 host. Does this just not work at all? I'd rather just be told that than searching google for more tutorials telling me to install guest additions which I have already done.

Guest to Host works for me. I haven't tried the others. It is text only as far as I know.
Edit: Bidirectional works as well.

Thanks. Can you confirm the version of Ubuntu, OSX and Virtualbox? Also, how did you install Guest additions - from the command line using apt-get install or mounting the iso? Did it work straight away or did you do additional steps as described here -

Clipboards only copy'n'paste text. Are you having issues with text?

running OSX 10.8.3 now although it worked with 10.8.2. I install the GAs mounting the .iso from the VB menu. no additional steps. Works with any Ubuntu based Distro since 10.04 I believe. also with Debian based, Gentoo based, Slackware based etc. probably with Windows as well but I no longer have any Windows guests.
I wouldn't recommend installing GAs fron the repos. they are out of date.
