Hi, I am running VirtualBox on a Windows 7 host and a Windows XP client. I am trying to connect to a VPN on the Windows XP VM and it can't establish a connection with either L2TP or PPTP protocols, which both work fully on the Win 7 host.

I am using a NAT connection in virtualbox.

OpenVPN is configurable with TCP.
But I would advice against the usage of TCP due to inherent issues with TCP on TCP, and move away from NAT if possible - did you try with Bridged?

Would be possible to introduce something like passthrough or shared network setup option ? Virtual machine would use host network as it was just an ordinary application running on the physical machine.

Unfortunately bridged networking is not always possible to use. When I am connected to a home router that gives me IP via DHCP, that's ok. But when I use mobile connection (via internal 3G modem in notebook) I can't use bridged networking at all thus can not use VPN from virtual machines because of NAT. In this case "sharing" host's network would be the solution.

In a word, no. That is basically what bridged networking does, but it requires that you connected to a physical LAN.
