[SOLVED]Virtualbox linux guest on Windows or Linux with Gui
Here is my scenario that I need help with.
I have a debian64 linux guest. When I run this guest on a Windows host machine it has random segmentation faults.
When I run it on a Debian64 host headless I get no problems.
When I runit on a Debian64 Host with gui like gnome or kde I get random segmentation faults.
I have tried several different machines with the same results.
As long as run headless I have no problems.

Re: Virtualbox linux guest on Windows or Linux with Gui
What are the versions of VirtualBox, the host, and the guest?
What kernel are the Linux machines using?
Is 3D enabled on the guest?
Post the guests log file (after a crash) & (as an attachment)

Re: Virtualbox linux guest on Windows or Linux with Gui
VirtualBox is latest 4.2.8 r83876 , but it has done it on all previous versions
Linux Kernel version on both host and vm 2.6.32-5-amd64 #1 SMP Mon Feb 25 00:26:11 UTC 2013 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Windows 64 bit host is on Dell precision 690 workstation with 16gig ram.
no 3d on guest...no desktop on guest
it doesnt crash...It just gets random segmentation faults. Mostly when booting. Some services will not start and I have to restart them.
Eventually when it has to do fsck after 20 reboots I have to boot in maintenance mode and run fsck many times to get it recovered.

Re: Virtualbox linux guest on Windows or Linux with Gui
First I would update the GAs from 4.1.8 to the release you are running, 4.2.10.
I also see that you have enabled all the extra settings and that is a good thing (most of the time)
I would however try to stop these one at a time and see if it is the cause of your segfault.
1) ich9
2) hpet
3) also try without the 3D enabled in the guest settings
If one of these helps then report which here, or post a ticket at bugtracker
Note: it would also help if we know the exact version of Debian you are running & the kernel version as well.

Re: Virtualbox linux guest on Windows or Linux with Gui
The kernel info is in above post... Debian 6.0 from this tutorial http://www.howtoforge.com/perfect-serve ... spconfig-3
have disabled 3d and ich9 but still seg faults...what is hpet? tried with i/o cacheing checked and unchecked...still seg faults...Have tried on other hardware also with same results- so that rules out bad memory and other hardware issues.
Only happens when host has gui interface - ie windows or linux with x-server. As long as running headless no problems.
Btw also installed latest Guest Additions on guest os
Ok....read about hpet. but not sure how to activate it or deactivate it.

Re: Virtualbox linux guest on Windows or Linux with Gui
I have nothing more I can give you remotely. All I can think of is to ask what happens if you just install the OS and not the extra ISPconfig package? According to your log file there is no indication that VirtualBox is your issue.

Re: Virtualbox linux guest on Windows or Linux with Gui
Well I'll try that and see, however I will note that ispconfig is the last package that loads on boot
to load and it seg faults before it is even loaded.
to load and it seg faults before it is even loaded.

SOLVED!!!!!Virtualbox linux guest on Windows or Linux with G
Solved!!!!
The problem is the Dell Precision 690...Apparently something is not right with all 690's...Dell quit supporting in 2006 so no bios updates.
I have tried it with several 690's with the same problem.
Just setup a Hp DC7900 with 4gig ram and E8400 processor 3.0ghz... System zooms and no more segmentation faults.
These Precision 690's were the first Dell products I have ever liked but it looks like I'll be going back to HP products.
So this note!! Dell Precision 690 is no good for virtualization.
