host system w2008r2 updated
guest system winxp sp3
if i make vbox and vmdk readonly for users they are not able to use VM, getting access violation error.
that happened after i updated to 4.2.6 from 4.1.14
read only worked with 4.1.14. i need my VMs could NOT be deleted or changed by user account in host system.
I use mixed normal and immutable hard disks. But it would be better if my vmdks were read only.
Is there any new opportunity to use read only mode with VMs??
Readonly VBOX VMDK
Re: Readonly VBOX VMDK
Readonly VM configs were never supported. If they happened to work ever that's more a bug than a feature.
Readonly VMDK images do work (as a base image for immutable disks), truly readonly harddisks are useless for the vast majority of users, as the typical operating systems can't deal with them (e.g. IDE/SATA have no way of reporting that a hard disk is readonly).
I smell that you're after "global" VMs, which is a concept which VirtualBox doesn't support right now, and we don't even know how they should work in a consistent fashion.
