Migrate VM's & Snapshots to Different PC
Hi Guys
Just wanna make sure I can do this. I am setting up tons of reference images for my job on the beefy home desktop but need to migrate them all to the laptop for when I am on the road. I have managed to move machines before but this time round the snapshots are vital to come along and continue to work. What are then steps I need? I'll show you what I have in mind.
Current Environment
Machines located @ E:\Data\VM
VM HDD TYPE = VHD (Dynamically Expandable)
User profile name "Admin"
Should it be enough to just install same version of VB thats on the Desktop then copy the ".Virtualbox" & "Virtual Box VM's" from Admin User Prof to the same user prof on the new machine and also the VM's to same Location on Laptop
Laptop (intended environment)
Machines located @ E:\Data\VM
VM HDD TYPE = VHD (Dynamically Expandable)
User profile name "Admin"
thanks alot

Re: Migrate VM's & Snapshots to Different PC
Actually if you want it all to be intact on the second PC you should copy the entire folder that has the guest and then use the add feature of VBox to put it in the guest.
Windows guest will see a difference in hardware and probably require re-activation, but other than that it should work the exact same way on the second machine.

Re: Migrate VM's & Snapshots to Different PC
Open the VirtualBox main manager and click on the machine tab at the top and then click on add. Or use the ctrl+A
You then drill to the location of the guests folder and look for the *.vbox file. Click that and it will add the guest.

Re: Migrate VM's & Snapshots to Different PC
Hi there ...didn't work can I check I did this right
this was a test with an existing VM
On the laptop installed Vbox from scratch.........
Copied E:\Data\VM\Machine.VHD from desktop to E:\Data\VM\Machine.VHD on laptop
Copied Machine folder from C:\Users\Admin\Virtual Vms\~Machine name~ (desktop) to
Copied Machine folder from C:\Users\Admin\Virtual Vms\~Machine name~ (Laptop)
Added the machine as per instruction
Tried to just open to test and error "proxy progress"
Same with restoring a snapshot
What did I do wrong - thanks!!

Re: Migrate VM's & Snapshots to Different PC
Post the guests log file (as an attachment) for the one that does not work.
See Online Users Manual for the location of the file.

Re: Migrate VM's & Snapshots to Different PC
Was the guest shut down (not saved state)?
Did the virtual CD still have the guest additions, Etc when you moved it?

Re: Migrate VM's & Snapshots to Different PC
Well the message is clear. VirtualBox can not find this guests HDD. You need to find out why, since I can't see it here.
From the hosts terminal/command window type VBoxManage showvminfo <VM Name> --details and post here. Replace <VM Name> with the actual name of the VM. Use " " if the name has a space in it.
Note if the host is Windows you need to be in the directory that has VBoxManage.exe for the command to work.

Re: Migrate VM's & Snapshots to Different PC
Now I need to see the VirtualBox.xml. This should be in your user space. Post as a *zip attachment
