Hi All,

I have one question about how can I use VM virtualbox Snapshot feature in my existing OVM environment.

I have Oracle VM Manager 2.2.0 installed and on top of that 5 VM of Oracle Enterprise Linux 10g and 11g created. Now I want to take snapshot of one of that VM but I don't see any option in Oracle VM MAnager , I have one option for cloning. Today I show one demo of Oracle VM VirtualBox but dont know can I use that option or merge that option in to my existing OVM ?

Can any one please guide me?

Thanks in advance...

2.2.0? Are you sure? 2.2.0 is quite some time ago (several years), it wasn't Oracle at that time, and the UI didn't support cloning at that time.

Assuming you actually mean 4.2.0... Why do you want to take a snapshot? If all you want to do is preserve the current state the simply copy the entire VM folder, with contents, to backup media. A snapshot is an anti-backup: i.e. not only is it not useful by itself as a backup, it actually makes it more likely that you'll have the kind of failure that only a real backup can fix.

I believe the OP is using the Oracle VM Server and is confused on where to get help.

The Oracle OTN is where the Oracle VM server is discussed. https://forums.oracle.com/forums/catego ... goryID=305

Hi Mpack,

Thanks for your reply and giving understanding.

yes. I have oracle VM Manager version 2.2.0(I double check from Web based link only). you are right, this version Introduced before 2 years or may be more than that (Not sure).

Question is why I am looking for snapshot - Reason is the VMs (OEL- with 11g template) faced issue with virtual disk partition , partition failed multiple times on system reboot. Recent issue is I am unable to repair 100G disk partition and team have to suffer data loss. Our database running in no archive mode so I dont have any option other than take running environment snapshot and revert back whenever faced the partition issue. I know this is not a good idea but atleast we can provide some level of data to my team whenever faced any disk partition issue. The same concept I am using with VMware so I thought could be apply here but over here in OVM link when I select for more option - I can't see snapshot so asking a question here.

As you suggest - simply copy the entire VM folder - does it mean from this location /OVS/running_pool/<VMname> ? do I need to copy when VM is running ? if I copy it entirely then I can see the current size of this VM is 443G which is again not possible for me to copy.

The only benefits I am getting with snapshot is - will take only 10 to 15% of total VM disk allocation size in snapshot and will be very fast in restoration.

We were talking at cross purposes. This site supports VirtualBox, not any other Oracle product. See Perry's answer (and link) above.
