Can't resume VM - HGCM Failure

Post by trueblue11 »

Hello.
I'm attempting to resume a VM which is 2 snapshots deep, and after attempting to restore the VM, I receive the following error:

Code: Select all

Failed to open a session for the virtual machine Ubuntu 11.04.

Failed to load unit 'HGCM' (VERR_TOO_MUCH_DATA).

Result Code: E_FAIL (0x80004005)
Component: Console
Interface: IConsole {db7ab4ca-2a3f-4183-9243-c1208da92392}
I've searched for this error, but none of the problems appear to be related to the VERR_TOO_MUCH_DATA attribute.

Attached is the full log if you wish to see it. Any help on this would be appreciated.

Did you by chance delete a folder on the host that you were sharing to the guest?

I haven't launched this VM in a while, so this is a possibility. Is there a way I can check which folders it is trying to access?

You should be able to see it in the *.vbox (control file for the guest)

All shared folder elements are listed as a self-closing <SharedFolders/> so I don't believe there are any shared folders it is trying to access.

Maybe you should post the *.vbox file (as an attachment)

Here you go.

Edit: It is not allowing me to post it, saying .vbox files are not allowed. Is this because it could contain personal information? What should I do?

Rename it to .txt or zip it

Do you know if the main program was updated while the guest was in a saved state?
Is the discard icon greyed out in the main manager if you select the guest?

The Remove Snapshot button is available, as is the option to delete the VM image from the left side of the VBox Manager.

No not the remove snapshot. At the very top of the VBox main manager there should be an icon that says Discard. Is it greyed out? I am trying to see if your guest is in a saved state or not and whether you upgraded VirtualBox while it was.

I see now. That discard button is available (not grayed out).

Alrighty then what about upgrading while the guest was saved? If you did that would cause this issue and to resume you would need to discard the saved state to get it to work again.

I definitely did upgrade while the guest was saved. I removed the snapshots, and it did boot again. It's rather unfortunate that the snapshots had to be removed and I couldn't merge the data with the master image. Is this a bug worth reporting so that others won't be faced with this issue upon upgrading VirtualBox? I haven't come across any posts that mention this specific error.
