Odd network issue... win 7 guest on a domain

Post by RSAT4U »

Hey I just started using virtual box not too long ago and have run into a bit of a snag.

To start, I admin a LAN with about 30 or so machines.
The domain controller is running 2008R2 and has been running flawlessly for a long time. (The domain is not very strict, there is a lot of instrumentation on the network that these machines communicate with)
All other machines are running Win 7 pro 64, and have ipv4 static IPs.

On my development machine, I decided to start playing around with vbox. I created a win 7 pro 64 bit guest, on a win 7 pro 64 host and successfully managed to assign it an ip and join the domain. Some of my software actually runs more stable on this guest, so I would like to keep using it. Network is set to bridged, and it functions just the way I want it to.

The odd part is now most of the network visibility is gone. 90% of the other computers can ONLY see the VM in network places, and the vm only sees the host... The network still works, i can type the \\address in and get there just fine. BUT some of the less tech savy colleagues of mine need to be able to see and access other computers though network places.

Network discovery is on, firewall is disabled on all machines, and there is no antivirus.

Hard to imagine what would cause that. Bridged networking should not have any effect on the network visibility of the host. Host and guest should behave just like two separate machines on the LAN.

One possible cause is an old device driver on the host which does not work well with the filter driver installed to support bridged networking. If that is up to date, I can't think of anything.

Have you tried running a network monitor to see what is happening with traffic to/from the host?

Thanks for the reply Bill!

Thats an interesting point.... the host is actually a dell poweredge server, running win 7.

Dell doesnt support that combination, or any client OS on a server, so they don't provide win 7 specific drivers.

I will try to find a different version of the driver and post my results.
