I started my VirtualBox yesterday morning, then started the Virtual Machine...a dialog box pops up saying new update available for download for the VrtualBox (4.2.8 latest version). So I download it and install it. I installed fine so I thought, when proceed to use the VirtualBox everything is going well as usual, then after I start the Virtual machine I get this error. I've tried repairing the installation twice unistalling it and going to version I was using before it (now using the 4.2.6) and still the same error. what does this mean? I don't know how debug VirtualBox. My files on my host (Windows Vista) are fine though just the ones for appliance are messed up I guess. HELP ME FIX MYIN THE APPLIANCE FILES PLEASE..THANKS IN ADVANCE!

Did you do what the message stated to do?
run fsck manually?

Note: I assume you do not have a backup, right? I would back the guest up before I continued doing anything else.

Thanks PerryG,

Iam new to using this software and fedora for online class I'm taking now, so please bear with me, But to answer your, I have made copy of the appliance "appliance 17-50.vmdk..if that is what you meant by backup. My attempt to use the command fsck was unsuccessful, I don't understand the structure of this file system in the VirtualBox appliance, what should be typed after the fsck command?

I do not want input something that has do with my host system (Windows) there are a combination of numbers and letters in the error message, which doesn't look anything to me like a directory path or file. Could you help me understand what parameters I should be using with fsck to fix this error. This happened after I tried to install the latest upgrade VirtualBox version 4.2.8.

Actually disk corruption shouldn't be caused by installing the guest additions. I suspect a coincidence but in any regards you need to boot the guest and since it takes you to a recovery prompt run the command indicated. Figured it was since dracut was mentioned. You sure that the guest was should down properly?

You should Google fsck fedora repair for the proper instructions.

Mr PerryG,

Are you familiar with the os fedora and are you an esperienced user of VirtualBox 4.2.6 ? I thought I was being clear in my posts,

MY HOST SYSTEM IS FINE... and IS NOT THE PROBLEM AND YES I HAVE A BACKUP OF MY FILES.... AND SO IS THE FILES IN MY APPLIANCE. But here is my post again, I have already Google'd these topics and just trying this and that with out asking questions from the vendor of the product is NOT wise...Sooo, that's why I'm here to get answers from more experienced users or help from tech support.

I've had new developments since yesterday I typed "exit" in the shell's help screen and it logged me out and logged back in and I was able to get into the appliance and the desktop just as if nothing had been wrong, but when I reboot the software (VirtualBox not Windows Vista) the same thing happens again as I described in the earlier paragraph,

The only good thing is that when I use the "exit" command it returns me to the normal state, which really not fixing the file system but a workaround.

BTY...

Fedora is the guest os i'm using in the VirtualBox as an appliance..if your not familiar with this just say so..it's obvious to me to google for answers, which is taking a risk, wouldn't you agree? My problem originated with the update to the software NOT fedora and now it's giving messages that my last update transaction was not complete and will not let me update the software. Now maybe if you answer this question about updating the problem, I will take the fedora question to the fedora website I've found already (googled it yesterday)

I think you would qualify me as shall we say more than a casual user.
Being snip may work to get you guidance where you're from but it does not work well for me sorry to say.

I shall bow out now and let someone with "esperienced" take over.

Have a great day.

Becoming aggressive is a sure way to turn people off. All the people here are interested users who volunteer to help. You will not find a more experienced VirtualBox user than Perry who is prepared to help you. If he was not an experienced Fedora user he would not have recognised what dracut was. I had no idea and had to google it.

If you are not happy with the replies you receive, goodbye. You are on your own.

BillG,

I wasn't being aggressive... and if it seemed that way then why isn't he responding instead of you. Why are you here to insult me instead of helping me learn the solution. I asked for help, posted my problem and was told to look it up else where so. Can you please ask Mr. PerryG to respond, or would you like to answer the question any help would be appreciated and credit will be given on this website as well as the online basic classes discussion board I'm taking online.

I do not want a fight just help, if being aggressive is what you got out of my post then again it wasn't meant to be. It just common sense to do so (backup your system) even if one is not using Virtual disks, I personally wouldn't install software on my computer without backing up my system first. And BTY I'm not so easily discouraged to quit.

Sincere Thanks,

Mr PerryG & BillG :D

Mr. PerryG,

I humbly respond with a simple thank you and I also failed to realized that I need more study of any software used for programming before installing it on my system.

Best regards,

Thanks Oracle for the lesson!

In passing I will say that your error is coming from the guest, not the host, and not from VirtualBox. Clearly the repair will be in the guest (Fedora) and the very first message told you what to do. I simply pointed out that this would be best accomplished by following the link. Hang in there you'll get it.

Oh and disk corruption also happens in a virtual guest. It is just confined to the large file that is saved on your host hard drive.

Mr PerryG,

Thanks for the encouragement. And yes I understand the problem is with fedora, I have very little knowledge of fedora. But this is the opportunity for me to learn. Thanks you for the advice, I will do as you suggested
