3D on Ubuntu 10.10 with VirtualBox 4.2.6

Post by galmok »

I just upgraded VirtualBox to 4.2.6 and after that, my Ubuntu 10.10 guest fails to render any 3D. After the Ubuntu login prompt, my desktop is not rendered. If I disable 3D in VirtualBox, everything runs (but 3D is slow, which means the desktop is slow).

Any known workarounds?

Install the newest VBOX version on host and the exact same version of guest additions in the guest.

No idea if its better. But it makes no sense to search for errors in old versions.

When I wrote that I upgraded to VB 4.2.6, I meant both application and guest services. I even reinstalled guest services to make sure it was installed properly, but it changed nothing.

What version did you upgrade from?

I upgraded from 4.2.4. During the upgrade, when I ran host 4.2.6 and guest 4.2.4, 3D worked as I could reach the ubuntu desktop without problem. After installing 4.2.6 guest additions, I can no longer reach the desktop. I can get as far as the login prompt, login and hear the login sound, but the screen only has the background from the login screen. I have tried to let it wait for some minutes, but the desktop did not reveal itself. If I disable 3D acceleration support in the host, I can fully login.

Log does not show a problem.

I would uninstall the 4.2.6 guest additions and install the 4.2.4 that worked previously and see if it again allows you to log in.

If so then you can try to install the 4.2.6 guest additions again and see if they continue to work.
If that fails, I would try to upgrade to the latest release 4.2.8 and see if this fixes your problems as there were a lot of fixes in regards to guest additions.

I'm getting the same problem. Installed VirtualBox 4.2.8 and guest additions. Same problem.

Upgrading to 4.2.10 did not help. 3D in Ubuntu still is a no-show.

I have attached the log file from a 2D run (vbox.log.1: startup and shutdown) and a 3D run (vbox.log: Up to the no-show 3D desktop... i.e. no shutdown).

Seams to be OK. Nvidia is detected, Open GL features are detected, Guest Additions reported version 4.2.10.

Only thing you can do is to set VGA-RAM higher (64 => 128 MB).

Thanks for checking my logs but 128MB video memory did not change the outcome. I guess I have to make a clean install and see if that helps.

Another question: Must it be the old Ubuntu Version?

I think its better to check a newer one (13.04 beta or 12.10).

It must be a problem in t he guest itself.

I guess I'll see if I can ditch the old version and see if it works with the newer version...

Checked with Ubuntu 13.04, it works.

First, after installation: check that all updates are installed. And uninstall the virtualbox-guest packages, if installed.

Then reboot.

Then in a commandline: sudo apt-get install build-essential

Then check again in synaptic (sudo apt-get install synaptic), that linux-header-packages are installed in the exact same version as the running kernel.

Then mount the guest additions, but dont execute automatically.

Then again a commandline:

cd /media/_YOUR_USERNAME_/VBOX*
sudo ./v*run

If there are problems, then post the result from the last command.

After a reboot it works for me.
