Are you using the default Windows mouse driver or did you install the mouse's specific driver?

The latter would be pointless since the guest sees a generic virtual mouse.

I should mention that the scroll wheel on my generic (actually HP) PS/2 mouse seems to work just fine in an XP VM (XP host too), both for scrolling and clicking. No special drivers have been installed, except of course the GAs.

What about using the USB pass-through? If the guest OS sees the real device, it should be possible to install the real driver.

Using the USB pass-through will kill the mouse. It needs to be shared between host and guest, and won't work any other way, and that means it mustn't be stolen by the guest using USB.
