Unity 3D now works correctly with VB 4.2.8 but...

Unity is finally working correctly on a Mac host(yay) with VB 4.2.8 but for what ever reason if you set the Dash to autohide Ubity doesn't seem to recognize when the cursor mouses over to the edge of the screen. Still, it's a HUGE improvement.

The auto-hide feature in Ubuntu =>11.* Unity has never worked in a guest AFAIK.

thank you Perry. You're probably right. I don't know why though. Compiz I suppose.

I believe it had to do with llvm, but I don't remember for sure any more. Just accepted it didn't work and moved on. There was a ticket at one point in bugtracker but it was so low on my list I never tracked it.

well, apparently if you set it to auto-hide you can show it with the "Host" key but for some reason the shortcuts keys I set for something in compiz now do something else.

anywho

Not for me. Running updated Ubuntu 12.10-amd64 guest on my updated Mac OSX 10.8.2 with VB 4.2.8 and guest additions freshly installed and using 3D acceleration. The guest still aborts within minutes just as it has for the previous VB versions.
This same guest used to abort also when running on a ubuntu 12.10 host using 3D but that seems to work ok now with VB 4.2.8.
BTW, as Perry says, autohide has never worked with VB. See
https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/971018.

I don't know what to tell you. I am also running OSX 10.8.2 on a mid 2011 iMac and ran it for at least an hour with no issues. I can try to run it longer to see if it does anything.
edit: btw, I am running Ubuntu 13.04 daily build.

This 3D related abort is quite a significant bug so I would have thought if Oracle had fixed it they would have mentioned it in the VB 4.2.8 changelog, which they don't. Does seem to be fixed on my ubuntu host though.

That's bleeding edge so could be a significant difference to me given you are probably running a newer xorg-server etc in your guest, and given this VB bug is probably related to the ubuntu transition to xorg 1.13.

I can try and install 12.10 later and see what's up. I'll post any info I have.

Must be host dependent. I have an ubuntu 12.10 guest running and it shows uptime at 8 days 1 hour and 11 minutes. I don't do Unity any more but use cinnamon and that's about the only thing different. My host is a mix of Debian, Ubuntu, and various special built packages that I use, but would be somewhere around the equivalent of Ubuntu 12.04 or Debian SID as far as packages.
It might help to know what exactly aborts. Logs, Etc.

Well, I installed Ubuntu 12.10 64bit and it does what it always did. That is it tries to draw the desktop but the panel and unity panel disappear. 13.04 works great, 12.10 doesn't.

I also found that the Unity panel and launcher disappear but I mainly use gnome-shell and with that it just aborts after some use. I suspect that Unity would abort also if you could actually use it.

for what it's worth even though it is alpha Ubuntu 13.04 works and is stable, I suspect there is something different in Compiz between the two. It seems Gnome Shell should work with 13.04.

Perry, didn't want to start a new thread but, I have now tried Cinnamon with Arch, Debian and Ubuntu based distros and all three randomly abort and rather quickly on a Mac host. Such is life.

Given what loukingjr says above that he finds Ubuntu 13.04 daily build works with 3D in VB 4.2.8, I installed the xorg edgers ppa into my 12.10 guest and find that it runs without aborting. Unity (i.e. Compiz) still fails to render anything so is unusable, but gnome-shell now works fine (except for desktop background video corruption in the activities overview but this has been a bug since at least VB 4.1.14 as per
viewtopic.php?f=8&t=49655). This xorg edgers ppa "fix" would probably also work for Ubuntu 12.04 LTS.
