Windows 7 x64, Bridge no DNS/DHCP

Hi,

using VirtualBox 4.x on a Win 7 x64 machine, I experience issues with bridge networking.

IP in general seems to work fine, but the guest will not be able to request an IP by DHCP or perform any DNS lookup.

I never had any compareable issues while using VirtualBox for years on numerous machines. I am also not sure what steps to perfom to retrace the issue. So I would be greatful if anybody could give me a hint.

Thanks in advance,
Mike

Following this guide,
Could you please, as an attachement, give a zip containing :
  • VM log file
  • The guest settings
  • The output of "ipconfig /all" and "route print" from the guest in a command prompt if the guest is Windows, or "ifconfig" and "route print" if the guest is linux

I see that the bridged interface is has #2 in its name, is that normal?
As for the setup, everything seems fine. Can you confirmed that the bridged NIC is actually the one connected to your LAN?

noteirak, thanks for reviewing the log.
Yes it got a #2, and the device is connected.

If you are sure you are using the correct interface, the next step would be to give a static IP to the guest and see if you can communicate with the rest of the network.
try ping on your router IP aswell as another machine on the network, and post back your findings.

It works as long as DNS is not involved.
I can ping the gateway via IP, but not e.g. google.com
But I can ping the IP of google.com with the correct IP.
Also, other services like SMB can be accessed when using the IP instead of DNS.

Set the DNS ip address in the interface config as the same IP as your gateway.
If this works, it means that the only issue is with your DHCP server, not with Virtualbox.

Already did. Wished it was that simple.

Can you ping the DNS IP?

Yes (its the router/gateway)

Then the issue is either in your guest OS, on your host OS or on your network config/equipement, but not on Virtualbox.
Do you bridge on Wifi NIC by any chance?

No, its not a WIFI.
I assume that it must be the host OS then (Guest ist clean installed from scratch, router works with any other device fine) and will try to get in detail there. Maybe I can fix the #2-issue as well somehow.
However, thanks for you help!
