Linux guest time extremely out-of-sync

Post by JYAero »

Windows Host: Windows 7 Pro SP1 64-bit
VirtualBox 4.1.16
Linux Guest: CentOS 6.2 (RHEL6)

You'll have to forgive me in advance for being a bit new to all this. But I tried to find solutions to this problem but generally got all confused through all the stuff I found on google.

Essentially my problem is what is stated in the subject. We have multiple machines with the exact same setup and hardware and two of them have this problem. One loses about an hour a day the other loses a whopping 8 hours a day. The system time on the windows hosts seem just fine, so I figure the problem is VBox.

At some point, the VBox log just got flooded with the following log messages:
00:25:35.448 TM: Giving up catch-up attempt at a 60 004 063 841 ns lag; new total: 706 188 849 572 ns
00:29:35.794 TM: Giving up catch-up attempt at a 60 001 348 785 ns lag; new total: 766 190 198 357 ns
00:33:05.273 TM: Giving up catch-up attempt at a 60 000 743 384 ns lag; new total: 826 190 941 741 ns
00:36:07.666 TM: Giving up catch-up attempt at a 60 000 460 322 ns lag; new total: 886 191 402 063 ns
00:39:37.822 TM: Giving up catch-up attempt at a 60 000 294 770 ns lag; new total: 946 191 696 833 ns
I've seen this info posted in similar threads as well:
00:00:03.072 TM: cTSCTicksPerSecond=0x7af71fb0 (2 063 015 856) fTSCVirtualized=true fTSCUseRealTSC=false (state load)
the values seem similar to the other working boxes, so I wonder if this info would help at all.

I'm currently not allowed to take the Guest offline, so I'm holding off for now on an update to VBox 4.2 in the hopes that it would fix things.
In the meantime, any other thoughts to help me figure out what's happening and fix this?

Guest additions are responsible for time sync so they need to be installed on the guest if they are not.

Also the kernel needs to be set for 100mhz instead of 1000mhz in a CentOS virtual machine. Add divider=10 to the boot line.
