Passing a SD card to the Guest

I'm trying to insert a SD card into my laptop (it's got a side slot for one) and have it show up on the guest machine running in a virtual box.

Host: Windows 7 64 for x86
Guest: Ubuntu 64bit

Virtual Box information:

Code: Select all

C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox>VBoxManage list extpacks
Extension Packs: 1
Pack no. 0: Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack
Version: 4.2.6
Revision: 82870
Edition:
Description: USB 2.0 Host Controller, VirtualBox RDP, PXE ROM with E1000 support.
VRDE Module: VBoxVRDP
Usable: true
I want to configure things such that when I insert the SDcard into my laptop and my virtual box session is running I want to be able to see the device show up in /dev/sdX on my virtual machine.

None of the settings seem to deal with SD cards. How can I "pass" it through?

You probably will not get it to show in /dev as this is a device being passed through. If the guest sees the device it more than likely will be a USB device and you would need to use USB to mount it.

So you're saying it can't happen, or you don't know if it can happen? I've passed through a Serial to USB cable before and saw that enumerate in the guest as /dev/ttyUSB0, I guess the internal SD card isn't on the USB BUS because I don't see it enumerate in the USB list... therefore you're thinking it's not possible to allow the guest access to it?

Is it possible to make a "symbolic" hard drive and mount that on the guest such that it's just a link to the SD card instead of a physical .vdi file?

I said probably which is not definitive. I have not tested this but I know how the process works. If you have the device in the host and start the guest then click on the devices tab at the top of the guest window what is listed under USB? Is it there?
